So, I have been scouring the forums here to find out what little juice I can squeeze from the m42...
Without having to cross reference about 15 threads with multiple pages, what have been your top 5 power gaining mods??? NO TURBO, NO SC! :D
I know the selection is limited, but I really don't care... just want to see what others have done/recommend...
:)

Won't happen.

+1; take out the "serious" and you have a chip first off, second lightweight flywheel which is not power gaining but parasitic drag reducing mod which feels like = to HP gain, Schrick/Delta regrind cams, MAF conversion, Megasquirt, etc....
That's my list of 5.
If you are looking at power out of an e30 318is, your options are M42 w/forced induction, OR go 6cyl stroker/swap, etc.......

22# EV6 injectors
BIG ASS CAI
Fleabay chip
Manual steering
Electric cooling fan
135 at the wheels

What is up with the free power mods for m42? 1)reduce weight 2) replace fan clutch with electric fan, delete power steering, delete ac, replace dual mass flywheel with single mass or less 3)aftermarket chip 4)reduce restriction on intake+exhaust 5)higher differential. 6)get some money and ....get a new engine
edit: Forgot to add: A)general maintenance: fluids filters pumps bushings seals gaskets hoses
-
nothing major to be gained without serious money, unfortunatelly... 2.1L + high flow head + radical cams maybe - but it all costs.
Turbo is your best bet... if you got the knowledge.

True... I should have said something like... "efficient mods for minimal gain" :D
For what its worth, the power steering has been removed and will be acquiring an electric fan... I am well on my way to a screaming machine! :o
I really wanted to know what I can do to make this car a little more fun before the 24v transplant... not sure I would spend that money to do some of those things, unless I could piece that stuff together at a salvage yard.

Wouldn't the 22# EV6 injectors confuse the computer (unless you had a chip calibrated for such) and automatically reduce the duty cycle of the injectors to maintain lambda, except at WOT? How's the driveability of your car, any CEL's? Curious.

Hes probably tuned for them.

What kind of knowledge? I have had several turbo cars, is there anything special a BMW requires to be turboed? I wouldnt be surprised at all. Im guessing a pricey piggyback.

Nope no problem at all with them. I used the 22# injectors with both the stock ECU and an aftermarket chip. Both ran but I saw much bigger gains with the chip. According to dynolicious ( please take the numbers with a grain of salt) it was doing 118whp with the 22# injectors and 135whp with injectors and chip. I think average for a stock E30 M42 is right around 110. I know of at least one other guy on here using 24# injectors so its definitely possible. But I haven't had any problem with mine.
-
I run 30lbs on the stock ecu lol
-
well, the knowledge which I do not posess... LOL :)
very few people made them work properly on M44 & M42s, that I know of (though I'm basing this statement on 318ti.org members mostly - havent really searched m42club.com too much)...
turbo selection, manifold & intercooler piping fabrication + engine management is beyond my realm - but if you got the knowlege, then you are ok... so again, it isn't imossible, just requires knowledge.

stock intake with k & n drop filter, chip, cut the muffler off put a dynomax hi-flow welded, and running on stock wires from 1991 (waiting on cop kit).
i put down 131 WHP with 103xxx miles on the clock

How about rebuilding your engine into a 2.1L with 12:1 compression and 88mm diesel crank. Install some aggressive cams and rev all the way to 9000 RPM with solid lifters and bigger valves etc. I am sure you will easily hit 200-250HP or more.

Got some real info on this???

not worth it.
you could m52/s52 swap your car for less than that, and god knows how much power you could pull from one of those motors to make the cost equivilent...cams, obd1 manifold, intake, exhaust, with a nice chip thats 250hp on the wheels.
24v swap ftw if you want some REAL power ;)
to reitterate in more simple terms, m42 is a great DD motor, a little peppy up top, but it's not a "powerful motor".. your not going to see a big jump in power unless you drop some serious $, or you boost the shit..ALOT.
-
^Agreed... plan to throw 7lbs on mine just to make it more fun, not really "powerful". But here's the 5 I did (so far)... dyno'd at 135.4 to the wheels on the dyno...
1. Ebay chip (proformance)
2. 19lb 4 pintle injectors
3. Deleted parasitic fan, installed electric (volvo)
4. NGK Iridium plugs
5. All new vacuum hoses, deleted TB heater plate

what kind of CAIs have you guys installed? K&N? aFe? what were your results? Steer me away from a K&N set before I buy it if you have had better results somewhere else!

KAMotors.

aem dry-flow cone filter, helps with throttle response.
