Title: When wont the pedal trick diagnosis work for me?

I have a 95 318i (09/94). I tried to retrieve some codes with the key in the ON position and hitting the gas pedal 5 times, but my check engine light just stays on and doesnt do anything.

Im trying to figure out why my check engine light comes and goes when driving, and why it turns off when I let off the gas while cruising but then comes back on after a minute.

I also get CEL when idling sometimes and my idle is very rough or surging while its on, but this is only sometimes.
