Title: M42 engine max speed problem

My car is 95 E36 M42 318IS AT. My engine can`t run above ~4500rpm...in either P,N and D shift. Is it had any prossible cases? I had already check the fault code (only 72 speed sensor problem). Many thanks for your kindly help!

your tach is probly just off a bit.

Post by: Boosted E30 on February 04, 2009, 10:33:32 PM: you need either a crankshaft sensor or theres probably an eninge speed sensor for the computer. mostlikly mounted on or around the transmision bell housing.

Replacing the Crankshaft position sensor and reseating the ECU connector solved it.

Post by: colin86325 on February 10, 2009, 10:04:52 AM: I had a problem like that on my M3. Somebody had swapped a 6-cylinder engine cluster into the car, so the rpms read 2/3 of the actual value.
