Hey guys, My car sucks again..... On the way to school, the car actually just shut off while driving at about 35 mph. It then would rev on its own from 1000 to 3000 rpm when I came to a stop. A quick tap to the accelerator would fix the problem for all of three seconds. Is the head gone again, or is it something a bottle of fuel injector cleaner would fix. I know its cold, but the throttle did not appear to be stuck, what could the problem be???
BTW: The car shoots an evil black plume of smoke and the car sounds raspy when it first starts. A few revs or holding it at 1500 rpms takes the raspyness away and the plume too.
The car also burns through about 2-3 quarts of oil in two months. Got to check this more often, what is wrong with the car?!?!?!?

I am not certain, but I think its the rings they are called, that could be causing blowby on startup. Also, with that oil consumption..... Did you have recent headwork? What happened that caused that?
It sounds like you could use a rebuild?
But the rest of the behavior with the idle and stalling at 35 is odd, TPS?

this might seem odd... check your relays in the fuse-box, make sure they work and have power to them. my car too would stall out on my going about 40-50 mph for no reason, turned out to be electrical/relay/fusebox related.

icv. mine did the SAME EXACT thing.
that is for the shutting off and revving, not to plume of smoke/oil consumtion.

I actually just had the head rebuilt and have all new internals. I have no idea why it lost so much oil. I think the idle was due to the negative three degrees outside. I just hope the head isn't cracked again...

Something is causing it to allow oil into places where it should not be (combustion chamber) and burning?
Perhaps something didn't sit right after this recent work and is now manifesting?
Your super cold temps would also contribute when it's been cold, gets warmed up, then cools back down, then repeat, etc.

Yeah, about the oil... when I start it up now, there is that evil black puff of smoke that emits from the tailpipe. It's definately oil and It happens after the car cools down overnight. Then the running is rough for a few minutes but goes away after a few miles of driving.
Where do you think the oil could be getting in through....

Is the smoke black or blue because oil burns blue. if the smoke goes away after a few minutes running and it doesnt smoke once the engine is warm i would say pistion rings are worn. how much oil do you consume inbetween oil chages because 1 to 1.5L inbetween oil changes is ok. Also if your car isnt used to cold weather then it may do some funny stuff.

It is an evil black color. It will come out through a few revs and then it seems to go away... The car has been in New England since having the engine rebuild and does fine regularly in the winter and cold...

Weird if its black i would say its more a fuel issue maybe you have a leaking injector??

I had the same symptoms when the temp dropped to -10 a couple wks ago. I had to keep the revs up. Being a TX car in Ohio, I don't think it like the cold too much. When it warmed up a couple degrees, problems went away.

Mabye, I haven't had the injectors changed but use fuel injector cleaner every once in a great while. I just did one and it didn't help. It may be leaking... Who knows???
