car came with a chiltons manual, have better on order. says I need special tools to remove fan from water pump
is this true ?

just removed mine yesterday! you only need an M6x30 bolt, a stong screwdriver and a 32mm wrench. If you try to loose the fan,it will turn all together with the pulley and the water pump, so you have to fix the pulley and loose only the nut of the fan. for doing this you have to remove the 4 m6 screws behind the fan which fix the pulley, insert the m6x30 bolt in one of the holes, put the screwdriver between the bolt and the axle of the fan and use it to contrast the force of the wrench. remeber that the fan nut is reverse: you loose it by pulling clockwise! i hope you can understand what i've written!

It certainly makes it easier, but I think you can do it without. The biggest problem is fitting a wrench in there - there isn't much room. A thin 32mm open ended wrench is all you really need, and what I used. Remember it is reverse-threaded.

32mm craftsman wrench and a mallet does the trick every time!
