Title: HELP! 90 318is oil leak / oil coming out of dipstick tube!
Post by: tbsol on December 15, 2008, 01:06:21 PM
I have a 1990 bmw318is.
The temperature was -44 celsius here last night.

I started the car in the morning & noticed oil leaking from around one of the valve cover gasket bolts that never leaked before. I also noticed there was a lot of pressure/oil coming from the oil dipstick when i removed it.

What would cause such an excess of crank case pressure?

Argh.. I've only had the car 2 weeks and having problems already.  :(

Please help!
Could this be caused by a stuck pcv valve? Or something that froze up?
I was told that the E30 doesn't use a PCV valve.. is this true?

any suggestions/tips?

I'm really hoping I can just give it a fresh oil change and a good unthaw and everything is going to be alright...

any help would be greatfully appreciated.

...-44 CELSIUS????

I didn't know auto engines were supposed to be cranked or even used at those conditions.

I guess I should have also included I'm from Winnipeg Manitoba Canada and the temperature's lower then -30 C are a common occurance here in the winter months.  It was -44*C with the windchill factor... ~ -34*C without.

The car had a block heater plugged in all night too to keep the engine warm and ensure that the coolant didn't freeze.

this weeks weather:  :(

Your block heater should keep it warm enough to start :)
