Hey I was just wondering when these need to be replaced? Is it based on visual inspection? I've got about 280k on my car now and would like to do some preventative maintenance before I get stranded on the road again. thanks.

The m42 does not have a cap? If it does, you can view the copper points. Not sure about the wires on how to check it.

No cap, no rotor on this engine.

pretty often, the manual says every 10k miles. I sell heavy duty ones that last about 15k. I'll send you a set for $250 shipped if you are interested, thats about $100 less than the stockers!
I'll even throw in some new muffler bearings for FREE!!!!

I replace plugs somewhat often like others, plug wires last forever, as do the coils.
Those are controlled by the ECU, no mechanical control for it, just as the others have said.
I have 267k on my engine, and just changed plug wires around ~240k.
Plugs whenever, people seem to have good luck with NGK plugs (ask around for the part #) albiet OE spec's a Bosch part.
