Title: Cat-back options
Post by: cagedbunny on November 11, 2008, 08:30:39 PM
Just wondering what folks are running for exhausts on your M42 E30s?  Doesn't seem to be a lot of aftermarket options out there specifically for the 4-banger cars, and I'm kind of opposed to dropping $500+ for a Supersprint.

Anyone running a good homebrew set-up?  I was thinking of getting some 2 1/4 pipe, some mandrel bent sections, and maybe a Borla muffler, and letting a local shop weld it up..

Since this was my first post, I'll go ahead and post a picture of the newly purchased faded-glory;

Lots of work to do, but I'm in love with the ratty little thing  :D

Alot of people run Magnaflow mufflers too.

I think custom is probably the way to go on M42 cars.

I'm going to do ebay SS replacement header (not longtube), magnaflow hi flow cat, resonator, and magnaflow muffler.  Hopefully that will eliminate any rasp and still free up 1 or 2 ponies.  Main reason I'm doing it is my header or collector has an exhaust leak that is driving me nuts.

How do you know it has a leak?

Does it make a noise?

Cause I have a high-flow cat, glasspack, and magnaflow muffler and it's pretty raspy.

I know you want a resonator, and maybe that will help.

It makes a noise at a certain RPM... like 3000 to 5000... after 5000 the engine is loud enough to drown it out.  Sounds great below that point for the most part.  I can hear the leak from around the collector/header area if I get under my car and listen for it.  If I heard it from the exhaust then I would just say that's the way the motor is supposed to sound...
