Where does one acquire one of these?  I totally lust after this car BTW!  It's got an M50 conversion too.  :cool:

Shouldn't be difficult with almost any kind of light screening material.  Seems as though I read on bimmerforums -when I used to go there before the REAL club arrived- that it is really of no value performance wise.  Does look kinda mean though.  Like an eye-patch maybe...

The temperature of air going into the motor affects power output. The cooler the better. There were some tests with the OEM filter and the K&N cone filter that found no difference on the dyno. However both were using room temperature air so they were only comparing flow. Same with a stationary chassis dyno. The benefit of the cone filter is that the air intake can be moved. All purpose built race car's try to get the coolest air possible into the motor. In the summer track temps can be 130*F and underhood and in car temps get coolsuit hot.  A good filter, insulated from engine heat, and as high as possible can give you 1-2 HP on the track at speed.  In stock car racing they have an expression about things that are only good for a hundredth of a second in lap time. "Ten of those is a tenth."

I have seen those used to get air to the intercooler in the turbo'd e30's, I dont know if it will have any real effect, but it cant hurt and it looks cool.:)

you could make that for like $5, scrap metal from behind a fab shop, a hole saw, and some screen.

Yeah, I too figured I could manufacture something to do the same thing, but this piece looks like a specific built part, and I've seen it on other cars as well, so some vendor must sell it.

If I can't find it for a reasonable price, I may try to make it myself, but kinda like the UUC clutch stop I bought for $25.  I could have made it myself for $10, but when the real deal is only $25, why bother?
If it's cheap enough from the direct source, I'll probably just buy it.
