hey, you should be able to add an avatar in the user CP... are you getting an error?

Not really an error - there is no means for me to add an avatar on the 'Edit Avatar' page.  It just says...  

Avatars are small graphics that are displayed under your username whenever you post.
o Do not use an avatar
Note: if you have a custom avatar selecting this option will delete it.

No other options.
