Title: Upper pan gasket
Post by: KenC on October 18, 2008, 09:00:22 AM
Is it possible to change the upper pan gasket without raising the engine or dropping the steering rack?

i don't think its possible without raising the motor but i think you can pull it off without removing the steering rack.

i was able to remove my e34 m50 oil pan without removing the steering rack, it was a bloody bitch but you can do it.

i put a jack right under the tranny just before it touches the oil pan and raised up. i also used one more jack under the header to give me that extra inch to finally pull it out.

my question is, whats holding you back from raising the motor?

Ken I would just use a cherrypicker to lift the motor up. Thats how i plan to do my gasket. Let me know, i have a cherrypicker out in hillsboro if you want to use it

I was just trying to gauge how long it would take me to do it.

I'm going to do it on a lift, so I'll probably just us a deadman jack or two to raise it up.

I am going to change my upper pan gasket tomorrow.  I'll let you know how long it takes.  I'm hoping to get it done in a day, but no more than two days.
