Okay...
I've seen the R3V Limited detailed how-to on swapping in an E36 steering rack into NON AIRBAG CARS. But what about our air-bag 318i and 318is? I understand you need to modify the firewall plate. No problem. But I haven't seen definitive answers about what modifications, if any, are required of the steering column knuckle connector (the R3V how-to shows how to modify the non-airbag coupler). But what about ours? What about hoses? Does anyone have hands-on experience with this swap in a US model, 1991 318?
If I get enough detail, I'll do a How-To for the site.
I may need a steering rack and would like to install the quicker 1995 E36 M3 rack.
HELP! Thanks. Gary

There is no change needed to the knuckle.
The E36 steering rack is set at a different angle hence the need to trim that firewall plate.
This is exactly what I did with my car.

Thanks... Do you need spacers between the rack and frame? E36 hoses? Or bend stock hoses? Where did you get your rack? Did you like the upgrade? Thanks. Could I call you?
email me your number, if you're okay with that. gtmedley@gmail.com

You don't need to modify the firewall. Simply remove the black plate surrounding the steering column from the inside of the firewall. I used washers as shims to move the rack up about 1/4"

Has anybody done this upgrade at a shop? If so, how much is typical for the change including parts and labour? I'd like to upgrade my E30 rack to a quicker E36 or Z3 rack, but haven't been able to get concrete advice. I'd like not only quicker steering, but heavier too, as mine is way too loose on the highway. Advice would really be appreciated.
