I have a 1993 318i and i hear ticking at higher rpm's(starts around 1900) but really faint at idle ... I got this car and it runs good just the noise is killing me..I dont hear it inside the car just when i roll down the window.... I know the noise is coming from the valve cover and i took it off and to adjust the valves... but there was no way to adjust them.. (not like old chevy motors)... I dont feel like replaceing everything under the hood till i get it..
I;ve heard it all from using a better gas to ,lifters to ,oil to ,timeing chain to ,water pump to ,fuel injectors ...... what is it??? I know Almost all these cars do this but whats the sure bet on what it is?????
Im thinking its the lifters but there is this black shroud that covers the rockers and lifters and cam... i wonder if maybe that is hitting a rocker and making that noise??? i was going to just take it out but didnt know if i should ..i think that it makes the oil splash on the cam and lubes it???
I also tryed some of that thick ass oil thats like for motors to stop smokeing and makeing noise but didnt do anything...( and no it wasnt smokeing befor that eather). any one have any good ideas or dose it turn out that im going to have to chase down the noise peace at a time???
oh yeah the cars has 171000 k about 100000 miles

All the M42's I've owned have had loud fuel injectors. There's no rocker arms in an M42. Leave the shroud installed in the valve cover. Could be an exhaust leak at the headers? Perhaps you can record/film the sound and post here? A mechanic's stethoscope would be handy to locate the source of the noise as well.

the lifters do just make noise when they're old and worn out. kind of an expensive repair, but do as u must.

Its not the fuel injectors i took a wooden rod and its coming from under the valve cover..(i reved it up and it gets worse) i know it has a small leak somewhere but like i said its coming from the valve cover.. but i bet the leak dosnt help any...

i looked up lifters online and there about 10-18$ depends on type.. i know i would need 16 of them but are they that hard to do???? cant you just loosen the cam and push the (Rocker type peice) to the side and pull the lifter out and then replace it???? thats if i can do it without moving the cam too much????

There is no "rocker type piece," dude. There are lots of write-ups on this site for the procedure.
Here's what you'll see once the cams are out:

Check your oil pressure before you get too far.

Hey Joe, that black thing under the valve cover - I am presuming that you are talking a the baffle - I believe it is apart of the valve cover and acts as a oil/vapour seperator so I would not remove it. Otherwise could you please post a picture of it because I am not 100% what you mean.

So did it make any more noise when you fixed it???? I know there is a leak somewere but i dont think thats where it is comeing from ... I can hear it under the valve cover.... Im sure the leak dosnt help out with the noise i bet it makes it worse...

Sorry man, had no idea you had SOHC. I have no idea about the inner workings of your engine. This is the M42 club!
