Title: Is my chain stuffed?
Post by: e30guydownunder on September 21, 2008, 04:44:22 PM
HI guys,

over the weekend i popped the valvecover hoping to find that I'd get away with just a chain tensioner and my chain noise on startup would go away.

Unfortunatly the teeth on the cam sprokets are all but perfectly pointed. Say 0.5mm of flat left. I also took some measurements of the chain to try and find out how much it is stretched.....9.7mm turns put to be the pitch of whats in there. I took other measurements but can't remember them off the top of my head, im at work ;) While we're talking about it does anyone know what the standard pitch is

So my real question is....is engine timing component failure iminent.

I have another engine that i will check out soon enough, i think it has been given more love than my current engine.

And yes i probably should have taken pictures

edit* oh and the car/engine only has 170000kms or just over 100000miles

I can't say it will fail tomorrow, next year or never, but its on its way. You have to make a decision on cost vs benefit here. You might be better off just buying another car or parting this one out or just driving it into the ground. Its all up to you.
