Title: Crankshaft Position Sensor?
Post by: Siksnot on August 29, 2008, 05:32:14 PM
I have a '91 318is E30..... I have had an engine hesitation problem for quite some time now, until finally today it is to bad to drive. At idle it is fine but when I rev the engine it hesitates and gets worse as the engine gets hotter.

I checked the Camshaft Position sensor (the top connector) and it is fine at 1280 ohms but the crankshaft sensor (bottom connector) is only reading 0.587 ohms. Could this be my problem? Has anybody run into this before?

Thanks

Set your meter to the correct setting and if it reads 550 to 600 your fine with that .It looks like you set your meter to the wrong setting hence the point 587.

You are right a typing mistake, It is suppose to be 587ohms. The Bentley manual's limits are 1280+-10%. But should this be a problem?

Bentley manual is incorrect in this instance. That's actually the reading for the camshaft position sensor. Crankshaft is between 550 and 600 ohms.
good luck

Mine is reading at 543 installed in the car.  I ordered a new one due to a no start issue.  OP: are you having starting issues as well?

i had the same problem one night coming home from a friends house,  floored it, and i think the cams just rolled over, and got out of sync. i had to rev the engine near red line all the way home or else the engine would jerk. disconnected my spark wires, took off head gasket, got in the car and cranked the engine, real quick, two or three times. Replaced the head unit, wires, started right up and ran fine ever since. tell me how it works out.
