Title: Random information thread!
Post by: RouteZeroDesign on August 03, 2008, 08:18:41 PM
Seeing as i create this thread with continuing success on every forum i visit, i think that i will start it here as well!

The Random information thread is used for posting random stuff you have in your head.
Whether you want to tell people about the funny incident you had in your car today, ask a simple one word answer question or tell someone about that awkward taxi journey you had with your oddly attractive second cousin last night....it really doesn't matter!

Whether you want to get it off your chest or just want a soapbox to stand on, anything that doesn't warrant a thread to post about but you just need to tell someone, post it here, no matter how meaningless:D

The advantage of the meaningless information thread is that it keeps the crap out of the people's threads, doesn't clog up the forums with simple question threads (Eg: Q=Is the m42 Awesome? A= Yes!) and also gives people a place to vent!

So...To lead by example, heres my random information for the day.

I havent been on here all that much lately, mainly because ive been less concerned about modifying my car as i have been getting it ready for the NCT (National Car Test) but also because i've been having un-pure thoughts, and thinking about other cars that i'd like:(:(
Ive been weighing up in my head the cost of turning my 318is into the car that i want and the cost of buying a different car that would fill it's place...and to be honest, the costs are very close.
I absolutely love my IS, but sometimes when i think about all the work and effort that it needs to be perfect, i start to think about other cars.

This has all been happening over the past 3-4 months, and about 3 months ago when talking to my dad's friend who owns a garage nearby, he told me he had an M3 for sale...but a totally destroyed m3 at that!

So now I have an e36 318is as my daily driver and an e36 m3 to take parts off to try turn my 318is  back into the car of my dreams.
The insurance company still haven't released the m3 for me to start taking parts off it, but when they do, you guys will be the first to know.

...and that's my random information for the day...Whats yours?

This seams like a cool thread! I've been having devilish thoughts of having a 4 door e36 dropped on some BBS's, but then I think about the fun times with my m42 and I know I can't betray her.... It'll take some time to get over, but I know I have the better car. Maybe later I can have both?

Well, why the hell not.

I'll start off with what I spent my day doing. Live in the parent's house, will be commuting to school atleast next year. Either way, I didn't have to work today, so I was enjoying sleeping in a bit, it was 10 and my mom rushed into my room telling me to get up, my dad had a tire blowout on the way down to where we keep our boat. He was in his 1977 F350 that he pulls the boat with, its his trash truck. He has a spare but it was flat from sitting for years, I threw a scuba tank in my trunk and grabbed the remainder of a plug kit I used a few weeks ago. Got to where he was, jacked his massive truck up with 2 blocks of wood and a bottle jack the size of a can of soup. After all of that, he still wanted to head to the boat, so my mom ends up leaving with him towards the boat. I went home and pulled my old 1970 Honda Trail 70 out of the garage to just tinker with. I ended up pulling the carb apart, because well, its probably never been apart. I find that the float bowl has a small pin size hole where it had just worn thin from the inside. I whipped up some 2 part epoxy and smeared it smooth. It was 2 by now, and I went inside to cool off. Ate some lunch and tried to watch some of the X-games at 3, didn't last long. I decided I wanted to wax my car, I washed it the night before but I ran out of light before I could wax. Pulled my e30 into the garage and detailed it for hours, then put the carb back together. Its really amazing that the little honda still runs the way it does. My dad actually used to ride it when he was about 15 and over its 38 year lifetime the oil probably was changed 2 times. I used to ride it when I was 5 and I know that since then no one has taken the time to change the oil. I checked it at the beginning of the summer and there honestly wasn't a drop of oil in the thing. Its really crazy. Well that was my day, changed a tire, detailed my car, fixed a leaky carb, and sat and read about how I'm never going to be able to afford to convert a M52 to obd1 and swap it into my car for probably another 5 years.

Yeah I have the same thoughts, but then I look at E36's, with the exception of the M3, and I realize I don't like them. And it seems that M52s are becoming as cheap as M50s in my area, so I have been doing a lot of reading on swapping to obd1 and such. Of course I won't be able to shell out that much money towards my car atleast until I have a good job and don't have school to pay for, which sadly is going to be quite a while.

I went on vacation last week and being from Minneapolis where there aren't really any military bases I am unfamiliar with the ins and outs of living near one. So when we were passing the Pentagon in Arlington, VA and I needed gas I stopped at the convenience store across the freeway. Well as it turns out NEX isn't a gas chain brand, but an acronym for Naval Exchange. And they are pretty pissed off when you fill your tank and go in to pay with no military ID. Lesson learned.

Random enough?

So I'm struggling to decide which way I should go for the winter time...

I could A) Save up for school, and just work on the getting the 318 running in tip top condition.

Or I could save up for some nice light race wheels, and tires, and start getting the lil M42 ready to hose my freinds Volkswagons.

OR tear the roof off of my burb and get it perpared for a full cage, and boatsiding...

Now I don't know about you guys, but I like trail rigs, and have been working on mine for a while. So I can go slow and get dirty, go fast and beat down my budds, or go to school and learned.

This was a retorical question, but if somebody has input or cares, giver'

I pitched in on the lotto ticket group buy we have at work today. I have a good feeling about it too.

As soon as I handed the money to the guy who was going to pick up the tickets, "Do it Again" by Steely Dan came on the radio. I think it's a good sign:D

If I do get a portion of that 43 million dollar pay out, you'll be sure to have a no money limit build up of an M42, hahaha.

many tools
normal house next to garage
truck and trailer
build a track car

retire at the ripe old age of 23, hahaha

Last year I delivered European auto parts to the south side of Chicago. Every driver there had a POS riceburner even though we had access to euro parts at wholesale. Theres big money in running a German auto shop if you know how to run it, but some of the biggest ones were too crazy, some of those guys are always on the verge of snapping. The south side is cool, but as a north side native I could never really fit in. Its weird how that works. My left arm was always sunburned, and when I forgot the sunscreen I had to keep it tucked in down low. And when I drove up on the highway I could see the smog and would run my AC even if it wasn't hot outside just to filter the air. Used to hang out down town waiting for parts in a pay/parking lot outside of a courthouse with an older Ethiopian man. One time a couple morons walked up and stuck a pistol in his face and demanded money. He refused and told them that his boss would make him pay out of his own pocket. People would always pull up acting all serious and in a hurry. No one looks happy going into court, except maybe the lawyers.

Anyone notice that vinegar raises the boiling point of water??

And dosen't vinegar clean metal?

So couldn't you run vinegar through your system to clean it out, and still have some sort of boiling temp riser fluid.

Just a thought, and if you don't believe me, boil a pot of water, then dump some white vinegar in there. And if you feel hungry, crack a couple of eggs in there, and you'll have poached eggs, and some new information.

Cant believe this thread is still going guys...keep it up :)

My random information is that.
I bought a meguirs clay kit a month ago from Halfrods, but when i got home there was no clay in the kit :(
I then brought it back to the store but i had lost my receipt...so no refund :(

Well today, i went to the store, bought ANOTHER claykit, brought it home, took out the clay, and then brought it back saying there was no clay in it and got a refund.
So after a month of waiting i finally got my clay back...JUSTICE AT LAST :D:D:D

Haha that reminds me of Garden State. Where the guy refunds items costing less than $40. "Mame, these knives can't cut cans; Well did you try the included sharpener; Look lady I don't want the damn knives, can I have my money back?" Classic stuff.

I have not climbed (indoor or outdoor) for about a month, until today.  Wow, I am out of practice lol.  Good times nevertheless though.

Also I am a tad nervous that I might get an ear-full from my boss.  I was in charge of designing an experiment, sent him the test plan, and ended up doing it a little differently to save like 80% of the time it would have taken (never mentioned the change though).  Well, I made a super spiffy report with good numerical analysis and lots of strong technical reasons for it.  Hopefully, it will stick lol.  Better to ask for forgiveness than permission.....?  The results are exactly what I was expecting anyway.

I love that movie, i think the main difference though between what i did and what he did, is that he took the knifes from the store...and then got the refund for something he didnt buy lol.
great movie, i love the bit where he wakes up and there is a knight looking at him.

Your post's are kinda surreal, because my character in the Rock game is called buckethead, and also my old dog was buster......strange!

Not so much random information, but Tim's wishy washy thoughts for the day... mainly that I need a new job. I'm so bored. Been wondering if I could move to NYC with my current company, visa would be tricky but having knowledge of the company and it's products etc it might be possible on the grounds that the company can't just pick someone off the streets to do what i do. Doubt I could get seconded as we're too short-staffed here they wouldn't release me. Burnt out with London, fed up of job and the reasons I came to this city no longer exist.
That and I need another Ring trip, first wknd of Oct I'm gunning for.
I've also been thinking about getting an MX5 (miata) or something and a boring e46 318 as the daily, instead of trying to make the e30 do both track and daily duties...
thoughts?

I've never driven a miata, but If you like it then sure. If it was me I would keep the e30 just mainly as a track car, and then pick up a nice dd. How much do miata's cost over there? How much could you sell your e30 for?

Miata is a good pick. Cheap, prevalent, tons of parts at cheap prices, excellent handling, no bad habits, easy to work on etc.

I really regret selling my Miata to get an E30.

Post by: tim_s on September 02, 2008, 06:23:17 AM
I'm not sure about the value of my e30, it's quite high due to the spec - it has good suspension/arbs, lsd, the 2.1 engine with forged bits, arp rod bolts, lightened fly, mls h/g, flowed head, catcams, standalone mgmt, big bore tb, lpg, cruise etc and is quite clean.
An mx5 (miata) mk1 would cost less, a mk2 would cost about the same. If the right BBR turbo turned up I would jump at it. The plan would probably be to get a mk1 miata and an e46 318 on lpg as a dd. My e30 is much more powerful and faster in a straight line than the mazda, but on the twisties they're a lot of fun! I remember chatting at the ring to a few people about some of the times that people can do in miatas, I think it would take a seriously good e30 to match them. I've always loved the handling and the 'feel' of the miata when i've driven one, but whenever I've been on track the only cars present have been a good deal slower than my e30. Though a lot of that may be down to the driver, I think with such a momentum car (low power) you really need to be committed to make the most out of them.
I'm not sure about it all really, I've had the e30 for a long time and it is a good do-it-all car. It's quite well mannered as a dd, and quite good on track. It's not perfect at either though - it needs less weight, more grip, better brakes, stiffer suspension for the track, yet needs a better idle and a better map, more sound deadening and less noise to be perfect on the road. That's why two cars appeals -the e46 would be quieter, more comfortable, better on fuel etc as a daily, and a mazda could run a serious track setup. I was very impressed with my friend's vx220 (opel speedster) at the nordschliefe.
Is just a thought at the moment.

The idea of keeping the e30 as a track car and getting another dd did cross my mind, it would be a sad way to treat it though i think as it's in good condition, and ultimately the e30 is fairly heavy and a miata would probably make a better base for a track weapon.

I just got my control arm on... it was a wrestle, and it was only the driver side...

I am really fearing the passenger side. I've read only bad things about the passenger side control arm nut. I'm wondering whether or not I can loosen the nut off, and then fit a cut off wheel down there, and just cut off the bolt.

That's how the driver side had to come off.

Sorry I am excited, and worried at the same time. I have vented rotors for the front, and drilled rotors for the rear, and the retaining screws for the front rotors are stripped. I think PO reinstalled the same semi stripped screws in the hole, and just said f**k it... That pisses me off too.

Sorry had to vent.

Okay so I'm typing this all on my Blackberry so bear with me if I make a lot of grammatical errors, but I need to vent.

So its October now, I've been working up and down California since a few days after my 18th birthday on April 8th. I have my own apartment with my older brother back home in Missouri that I just moved into before coming out here too. So far I've spent 2 weeks since April home. The rest of the nights have been spent in a hotel bed. Its not like I stay in one hotel or one city a week either. I change hotels almost every day or at least every other day, and drive as much as 500 miles between cities somtimes....fucking hate how tall California is....greedy for land aren't thos stupid bastards. Anyways its a very gruelling life not seeing my friends, my apartment, my family, my anything. I know military people stay out for a long time too but damn, I've been gone for 8 months. I've spent nearly or more than 4k in rent on something I've seen a total of 2 weeks...so basically I have a nicely arranged overprice storage space with electricity, fuck yea.

Also haven't been able to work on my own car that I purchased months ago. I've literally had to have friends of mine work on it for me so if I do come home for a few days (2 days most of the time) I will be able to enjoy it and what not...fucking sucks not doing my own work.

I never know when I'm coming home for time off either. Right now were shooting for the 23rd-ish - the 2ndish of this month but who knows. We have to go to hawaii soon to do 7 stores that will take us nearly 2+ weeks and we're taking a vacation down there too. But in all honesty I'd rather be in my small Springfield, MONTH where it will be freezing and boring at this point in my life.

I'm not a racist. I am not prejudice. I was born in Sacramento in fact but we moved to a small country town in Missouri at a young age. Ever since living there I've grown acustomed too very friendly kind hearted WHITE people with almost zero crime and everyone of course spoke english. Not to mention that everyone in missouri will pull over to he'll you if your broken down on the highway or stuck in the snow. California has just pushed my buttons too much. I don't go to just the nice cities, I see the shitty too. I'm sorry if I offend anyone by saying this but I'm tired of all these immigrants that are rude, unthoughtful, can't speak or understand a drop of english, and just overpopulate California and swell up the welfare system because of course they all wanna fuck like rabbits and have 7+ kids when they financially can't affor 2. Its just ridiculous here. Northern California isn't bad but I hate Southern California. I'm don't see why they call it socal....should be Northern Mexico. But then all the illegals there would start to swarm norcal just to be in the u.s.. And no I'm not judgemental of each one, just the ones that are rude to me without even speaking english in a country that is founded on it.

Anyways I'm sure that will tick some people off but if you were in my shoes you'd unerstand a hell of a lot better.

/rant (even though I held a lot back to remain less rude)

So I am trying to figure out where to put my truck for a little while.

I have tried many garages that I see for rent, but they want 200+ dollars a month. Something I am not about to do.

Plus half of those garages have 7' doors. And my truck won't fit under that. So I think I am gonna go door to door on houses that have large barns, or garages. Maybe I can get a person that has the space, and nothing to fill (but that's nearly impossible to find).

The truck has soo many new parts it wouldn't be worth it to sell, but it is so large, and ugly that it cannot stay in the driveway the way it is.

I'm the new kid on the block so this is my first post:

I'm going out this Thursday to look at an e36, 318i 4-door w/5-speed.

It has a couple of minor issues but I travel a lot and the additional gas mileage will help (even though I charge my clients $0.40/mile for portal-to-portal travel.

My old e34 525i has 376,000+ miles on the chassis, transmission (automatic) and most of the components. The engine gave-up at the 366,000 mile mark because I did something foolish. I was passing a 4.6litre Mustang GT in Kentucky on Interstate 75 and he decided that I Wwasn't going to pass him and I made up my mind that I was. Well, for 5 miles or so we went at it at 135mph and I finally got a break and squeeked around him. He gave it up and backed-off.

Well, I broke the center electrode off in # 3 cylinder and took a chunk out of the #3 exhaust valve, YUP, a dead cylinder. I didn't change the plugs for 80,000 miles, MY FAULT. Another engine with only 129,000 miles, the installation at a specialty shop & new timing belt, new front & rear seals, new water pump + some new intake parts to replace the 20 year-old rotted rubber components and a new a/c blower motor all came to $2,300.50! BUT I BEAT THE DARN MUSTANG!!! It's an old Marine Corps Fighter Pilot Thing.

I look forward to getting either a 318i, or 318is (the i would be better since I carry a lot of test equipment in my back seat).

I'll be back often asking questions about e36's.

My youngest Daughter has a 2000, 328i with the M-Sport interior and handling package. I also have a 1990 535i, 5-speed, & a 1987 635Csi, w/automatic. So I'm pretty well versed in BMW's. Anybody have any questions about vehicles other than e36's, just ask & I'll try to help. I'll be looking at the threads and asking a bunch of questions when I get a 318.

Sell the Subaru and get an e30, 325iX.

I had one, fantastic handler, 40/60 power split, 40% in front & 60% in back. It felt almost natural until you got deep into hard corners then look-out Audi Quattro's!
