Title: Most HP out of 91 M42
Post by: 16v of E30 on July 30, 2008, 02:46:21 AM
Hey guys just wondering what the best options for getting the most power out of my 91 m42 engine.  It already has a conforti ecu chip adding 15hp supposedly...

under a $1000, what would you do to get the extra umph?

is there a way to give my engine some cold forced induction?
thanks

Welcome to the boards... but before the OG's get to you, let me be the first to say use the search function.  In my experience the best way to get good hp out of these is to keep it well maintained so as to not loose hp.  Here's the shortlist under $1000 in order of gains to the best of my knowledge.  I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.  This should help too:  318is Power List (http://www.r3vlimited.com/tech/318is/318is.htm).  Oh and remember the search function :)

1. chip - you already have
2. m20 or lightweight flywheel
3. exhaust
4. CAI
5. cams - if you can find them cheap

For less than $1000 you could buy on ebay a cheap vortech supercharger or other centrifugal supercharger and bolt it on a custom plate, run a low boost (because of compression ratio) like 6-7psi and it could give you easy 40-50hp with minor tuning to the fuel. You might need as well a little bigger injectors, fuel pressure regulator, and an extra fuel pump.

It's near impossible to get the pulleys to line up isn't it?  Haven't seen anyone do a centrifugal blower on these.  You have any links?

It shouldn´t be a problem to line up the pulleys, it just would take a while to get it done well.
I will do this to my M42 in a few months.
Some people here have gone the roots-type blower, with very impressive results. But a lot of fabrication involved...
I think going with a centrifugal blower is an "easier" way to get a supercharger on our engines.
Well, actually I´m thinking that having a serpentine belt system from an E36 would be a must. My E30 is already converted, so one problem less to deal with...

^I was going to ask about that too since I still have V-belts.  Post up a thread when you get started working on that project.  I wanted to do a blower but DA stopped selling theirs I guess.

Maybe I don't have to go turbo.  Although it does sound easier if you can find a manifold.

Guys, I havent done much research on setting up a supercharger on this car, but could you potentially use the threaded portion of the water pump pulley (where a mechanical fan mounts) to mount a custom pulley? Might look goofy, but if you dont run a serpentine belt, might it be an option?

you've got some errors in your calculations if you think you can go force induction for less then $1000. once you've got said super charger, and have fabed up the brackets and pulleys to match, you at least at $1,000. then you've got to do injectors, fuel management of some sort, be it a wide band with a rising rate fuel pressure regulator, a standalone, or simply a piggy back.

I think you can do a JY volvo turbo for around $1000 as long as you use the m50 manifold and have the last 2 tubes removed and welded.  Otherwise an m42 manifold will be $$$ but will save alot of time too.

I don't think you can do SC for under $1000.  But I could be wrong.
