Title: Tranny fluid leak
Post by: BMABMW on July 17, 2008, 07:25:45 PM
So I've got gear oil leaking from the rear shaft seal on my 5 spd 318i. I got another seal already but I'm not sure what grade of oil to use. I'd like to use royal purple if I can but I don't know the grade...any suggestions? It's a 95 318i...

i might be wrong, but i though royal purple syncromesh (ATF) was only one grade.

Check the sticker on the side of the tranny for fluid type and then you can determine the grade. eg - Mine says ATF so I just use ATF.

Some other ones may require special BMW oil with certain grades. Just check you sticker.

Royal Purple Syncromax is made for manual trannys that use ATF. It only comes in one flavor. I use it in both of my 318's with good results.
