Title: Those with 13-Button OBC's Installed...
Post by: bmwman91 on July 15, 2008, 04:44:42 PM
I will be joining you soon.  A local wrecker supplied me with the OBC, harness and turn-stalk.  I only need the coding plug.

The coding plug is a whopping $60+ everywhere I have checked.  So, and this is a long shot, can I borrow someone's?  I took apart the plug from the 325e the OBC came from and have identified the little chip inside.  I can pretty easily build a tool to read the values out (the chip only holds a WHOPPING 32 bytes lol).

SO, I would not need to hurt/take apart your plug at all, just plug in a radio shack connector and read the values with a PIC microcontroller.  I would shoot you like $20 or something for the trouble and shipping.  Literally, I would just plug the plastic housing into a generic header and read the values...no prying or anything.

Let me know if you can help me save a little $, and I can probably start producing these for people who would need them for a very low price!  Thanks!

Yes, do start producing them!  I'd like to convert over to the 13 button OBC as well - as my 2nd 6 button OBC has now shit the bed with the common LCD screen "bleeder"...  WTF is up with that, why do all of the 6 button OBC screens start to "bleed"?

Does the OBC conversion use a 325's coding plug?

Hey man, I can send you mine when I start working on my swap.

I mean, I won't need it anymore but the whole point here is so that you don't end up paying the $60 or so that it costs.

When do you need one?

I would like to have one as soon as possible...I am itching to start cutting my hands up inside the dashboard!  So yeah, I would like one as soon as reasonable possible.  Thanks!

(traitor! :p)

I recently picked up the same thing at the junkyard (except for the turn stalk) and was also looking for the correct coding plug.  I was wondering what the best alternate plug would be?

I don't think there really would be one.  No other 4-banger E30 had 20.4# injectors that I am aware of.  You would need to find a 6 cylinder car with 13.6# injectors (stock) to have an equivalent flow rate, and who knows what size tank it had.  As far as I know, no BMW E30 had injectors of that low a flow rate.  You can order one from BMA for $60, or you can wait a little bit and I can see about producing more of the one I get from dude8383.

Did you replace it with a new one ? Or a junkyard one? I've seen a couple of them that actually work 110% but 99% of the OBC i see are hard to read but still function

The 13 button ones that are hard to read probably need new bulbs (light strip)

They are wired in series.  I've modified one with two 12 volt bulbs wired in parallel, so if one burns out, you can still read the display.

Reading and burning the EPROM should be easy.  I plan to install the full OBC, so I'd be very interested in the plug if your run off some duplicates.

I'd have let you borrow mine if it wasn't already installed...I can't imagine that too many people have done this yet, so you have a pretty big market there.

I completed the swap over this past weekend.  Since I got a good deal on the plug, and have been super busy...I didn't pull the values from it yet.  Don't hold your breath or anything, but it is still on my list of stuff to do.
