Title: M54 O2 sensor

One of the four O2 sensors on my X3 3.0 has gone bad. Can I substitute a cheaper O2 sensor like in our M42 cars?  Are 3 wire sensors still just 3 wire sensors with different connectors?

I notice BMW has a different part number for each of the 4 sensors. So i am thinking precat and post cat sensors are different somehow.
