Title: Clutch/TO bearing Replacement

I don't have a decent manual for my '91 318IS(M42) and the throw-out bearing  is going south fast. New parts will arrive Monday (clutch kit, pilot bearing, bolts, etc.) but I'd like a DIY tutorial to guide me through the process. Anyone have a good link, or a PDF from the Manual?

I recently replaced my whole clutch package a few months ago, the only real tip I can give you is to make sure you have the right tools, specifically a nice allen socket for the flywheel bolts, the metal is super soft and they strip very easily. I ended up having to cut the head off of half of the bolts and it made the job that much more of a pain. It helps to have an extra set of hands to steady the tranny on the jack when trying to pull it away from the motor, mine came out fairly easily and I did it myself, but I used wood blocks and my knees to steady it. The actual swap is easily, you really need to pick up all new flywheel bolts because that way you can make sure you can torque them to spec without stripping them. TOB is super simple as you will see in the DIY. Lastly, the starter bolts are probably the hardest fit for any fastener in the world, its amazing that the brilliant BMW engineers placed them where they did, I got them out after figuring out the best way, but it is a true pain. Of course make sure you bleed the clutch slave after the job is done, and it isn't a bad idea to get the tranny super flat and replace the fluid.  Goodluck.

Thanks! One question - when you removed the trans did the engine need a separate support? I see a jackstand under it in one photo.

Your Done? did you replace the rear crank seal?
