Dumb question, I've searched several sites but haven't found much. Will an E36 steering wheel and airbag fit and work in place of a stock '92 318iC steering wheel and airbag?
-
I don't think they are interchangable but maybe someone else here can chime in.
Dan.

No, it won't. The splines are different and the airbag controller in the the e36 is a bit different. I believe e34 wheels will work though. Or maybe you should just ditch the airbag ;)

I'd rather just have an M-Tech wheel...I don't think the inspection guys would be too appreciative of a missing SRS system, though.

Would they even notice? Pull the check panel light and other obvious SRS stuff and you might get by.
-
what other stuff would you need to pull, i did the check panel light, but i dunno of anything else that would give it away? i got an inspection coming up and dont wanna fail cause of that and i really love not having that airbag wheel.

Well, there is the airbag thats in the glove box, as well as the impact sensors under the bonnet. But none of those are exactly obvious.

airbag in the glovebox? i thought the airbag e30s were only driver side airbags....

The impact sensors stand out like a sore thumb with the bright color. A competent inspector will notice them.
We are talking about an E30 right?

There is no airbag in the dash, that is just where they happened to put the sticker. If you want to do a full delete, do the check pull out the controllers located above the driver's knee bolster, remove all associated wiring and the impact sensors, and pull that sticker in the glove box. This includes the airbag plug and wiring that runs along the steering column. I'm not sure if there is anything else airbag-related in there.

Oh, I'ma rip that sticker off then, I don't have an airbag anymore.

Personally i want to get rid of my ugly steering wheel but i still want to get the insurance discount for "having" SRS equipped
