Title: noisy little thing, isn't it?
Post by: KyleTaylor on June 23, 2008, 08:57:19 PM
I have owned several BMW's in my short life, but this has to be almost the loudest engine I have owned.

The m10 was louder with 400k miles.

What makes the m42 engine so loud?  I am talking about valve train noise.

Timing chain instead of a belt.

Shouldn't have any valve train noise, but the chain can put out a 'whine'.

But if its clattering away then you most likely have some kind of issue, like low oil pressure or worn out chain components maybe.

It's valve noise.  I want to learn more about swapping to the 94 - 95 DOHC head.  And freshen one up to put it on.

Mine's quiet as a mouse.  Exhaust buzzes a bit.

What is the mileage?  I have a feeling the guides are just worn out or the lifters are getting weak.  Mine has over 150k...

81k.  If the guides are that worn out, I'd do a chain/guide replacement before the engine grenades.

I am looking for a lower mileage one anyway...

150k isn't really high mileage for a BMW engine.  As long as nothing else is wrong with it, I think I'd just replace the worn parts.

I realize that.  My e36 325is had 158k... I figured it would be cheaper to replace the engine with a lower mileage m44 instead of replacing lifters and the tensioner and chain.  That is with no labor cost.
