Allright so this is my M42 ;)
1990/09
Brought it from Germany exactly a year ago now, really happy with the car.
Regular mainenance, and added a little spice:
Lowering and sport absorbers
Raid steering wheel
Big diff 3.91, welded
Powerflex brushings
Front and Rear strutbars
Chip +9kw +600rpm
Catalytic converter removed
Lico (Sparco) Start seats
Weight reduction
I dont know what to plan for this winter when i dont drive with my car - I have a M50B25 rotting in my work warehouse, but i dont know weather to use it or not, also it has crossed my mind to turbo or to s/c the M42 nad that would be the main reason i registred here to m42club. I have tried a few e30s with M50, but im not sure that i would be satisfyed with that myself. Sadly there are no M42 turbos or M42 s/c here in Estonia to try them out, atleast not that i know of (read: that would be worth trying). Actually it seemes a bit better idea to s/c it for me atm. So any ideas are welcome !

Nice ride! I like the seat upholstery!
2 questions:
1) what happened to the rear wheel in the one pic above?
2) do you wax the interior of your trunk? :D

Nice ride! I like the seat upholstery!
2 questions:
1) what happened to the rear wheel in the one pic above?
2) do you wax the interior of your trunk? :D
1) I wanted to start a drift into a corner at about 80 kmh, i used contra move and a little handbreak going into the corner. Right at the moment when i got the angle, i heared weird noise, and a bump bump bump bump. I thought - ok, my wheel is loose, better slow down and just go to pits very slowly. And at that point, kaboom, the wheel fell like that. I thought, ok, bolts came off lets find them (luckily the cover on the wheel held them together till the dropped all over the track). I found all the 4 bolts, but, umm, they were kind of short... What happened was that 4 bolts were like cut from the drive flange, so there was no way to get them out and put new bolts in there (without proper tools). That was about the 3rd or 4th time my car has been on a trailer. :P
2) Evey time i wash my car i also clean the engine, trunk, door posts and doors, and all kinds of small tight spots you have between the seals ect. I like when things like that shine. :P A trained eye notices it right away... :D

first pic!! are you hunting sheeps?:D:D lol
welcome to the forum
-
I love all black bumpers. What rims are thoes, they look pretty good. How much weight have you taken out? It looks like your car can move. -Preston
-
A wolf stalking sheeps. ;)
Yes, ive started to love all-black bumpers aswell. :)
As for weight i have taken out trunk to bare metal, and interior to bare metal (the interior pic is a bit outdated). Only things inside are first door trim covers, 2 racing seats (sold mine for quite a bit), and the long plastic cover around gearshift/heandbreake.
I used to have a 318i for rally, and for that i also cut every piece of metal that had no use, but as for this car i dont dare to touch the nicely painted metal. :P Even the 318i was able to move quite nicely after cutting everything (EVERYTHING) out and putting on carbon hood and trunk. Should have weighed the car tho.
-
PS i dont use handbreak in drifing anymore after the point 1 mentioned above ˇˇ. Have to do a contra move/break drift/cluch kick/gear lock or whatever is appropriate before turn, safer.
PPS Didnt notice you ask about rims, they are somekind of ATS rims, the type i dont know and they seem to be rather rare also. If you can identify the type, i would be very grateful, since i lost one middle cover. :-/ I dont mind their look, tho some people dont like them. I also have a 5-spoke 16'' rim set i use for non-track driving.
-
Great looking car, keep smoking those tires and stay off the hand brake! :)
-
Really nice car. I just love, that it's in perfect condition everything looks like new. Maybe one day when i get my car going, do little drift session?:D

Why is your battery in the engine bay? I thought that was only for the convertibles and early 318i (M10)?

I think many if not all of the euro models didn't have the battery in the trunk. I'm pretty sure that the U.S. I's and IS's were the only m42's that did.
-
Yes i think youre right 318kid. In Euro i believe only 325i has battery in trunk.
Also i dont know if i am going to put it into trunk, the weight balance seemes to be working nicely for me. Just a little more weight needs to be shaved off from everywhere. :)
-
Got inspiration from suvi123, removed a little more weight in the weekend. All in all about 5.005 kg tar removed, i still have a bit to do. Should also wash the leftovers off today and it should look quite nice.
Also removed my left hibeam and made an intake out of black ventilation aluminium pipe. Should work quite ok when the car is moving a bit faster.
Also headlight aim controls came off, and windshiled washer fluid canister found his way to my warehouse.

Nice. But still little more to remove under handbrake, rear side panels, doors, and so on.
Cool stickers on rear windows!!! Especially "Weld it, Burn it". Can't wait to get my car painted and put all kind of sticky stuff on it. I'm thinking about sticker front numberplate too...lose little weight:D
-
Allright, today i got 2x 4-point OMP racing belts, and finally recieved the adapter for my Sparco seat.
I installed the adapter, then had to drill 2 holes for the seat in the right position, and put the seat in car. Yummie. Then also installed drivers OMP belts (witch are btw better than Sparcos own belts, because the joints where you can tighten the belt are way better, they dont go loose by themselves).
Also got a pair of the Sparco softening pads, because my right collarbone cant stand much pressure.
Did a little test run, omg i love it, so much better. :P Pluss the racing seat is about 8 kg-s. So it should be about half the weight of the original or smth like that.
-
Ok heres some pics of the interior. I cleaned the back seat a bit yesterday, a bit still to do but i ran out of the paint cleaner.

Nice rims! I'm not really feeling the crystal turns or the multi-colored front end, though. Your car has a lot of nice bits on it:plaid sport seats, adjustable lights, crank windows, casette holder, and the rims. If you weren't across a rather large body of water, I'd be trying to buy a bit of it :)

Yes, im waiting the middle cover part, and then i will be ready for repainting the whole front end. Also should paint the rear skirt.
As for the sports seats - i sold them to get two racing seats. Adjustable lights - dont work with the 'tuning' headlights, so i removed them completely. Crank windows - more reliable, less weight, good for me. Cassette holder - hahha, im trying to find the blank console part, but seemes there are none laying around. As for rims, those are my 15'', but i think the 16'' look a bit better. Just atm got good 15'' tyres on them so im driving with those.

On Saturday i competed on a track day (OpenTrack, Sauga track). A big track with speeds 100-170 with my 318iS, dont think it ever dropped below 100, or 90ish. The car was really good, i didnt think it would be that good to drive my drift setup on a trackday.
Yesterday we did a little drift evening also (Rapla track), same track as linked before in the rain. And yes, it was rainy again so didnt wear out my tyres. :) At some point i was about to crash into a concrete wall tho, that was not funny at all. I guess i got over confident and the angles/speeds went too big.
And since yesterday i have a daily-driver also, so good time to start some bigger works on my 318iS.

any plans for a rollcage?
-
any plans for a rollcage?
The thing with rollcage is its not expensive, but its just not street-legal here. So if id put rollcage in i would have to install pitch-black window tint also and id still have the chance of getting busted by some cops. So not so good idea atm, unless in the future i want to register my car as a sports-only car, and drive only on the days that some events are listed (not street-legal cars can drive around on training days and competitions that are officially listed).

Does anyone make custom ITBs here in the forum ? Something like dbilas does. Like from some bike inline 4 engine one (Yamaha R1 looks quite good).
I could do the flange for it myself, and i could do the intake muffler myself, would need the ITB part made by someone who knows what he does and what would work for an M42.
Not much progress on my car atm. Gearbox decided to break and at the same time i bought a superbike, so not much time for car. Tho now its spring and too cold to drive with bike, so gotta start working on BMW again. :P
-
On Friday got new gearbox installed. Also put on a number of polyretan mounts and engine aluminium mounts. Next tried to put aluminium mounts for gearbox also... its not doable. :P Also gearbox broke because it has uber weak mounts on it. To make it work the gearbox should be reinforced first. And a friend of mine who makes 1000+ hp cars occasionally in his workshop told me he never uses aluminium mounts for gearboxes, that wont never work. Ok, welded the gearbox together again and installed it with stock mounts. When all was finished i tried to start the car... wtf the car wont idle at all, and works like with 3 cylinders, wtf, ok reset... same thing, damn. The problem was one vacuum hose had flewn off, jeeeze. Got that fixed and started the engine.... ummm.... its rather insane, the vibration is all over the car. I tried it on Saturday on a racetrack, yes i think there could be a little power gain there tho. But the vibration is nuts. :D

I assumed that vibration will be quite insane, but handeling should have improved quite a lot. No inertia forces caused by engine movement. Do you have any pic's of transmisson form where it got broke? Did it brake when you were driving? I think aluminum subframe and differential mounts are also needed to use aluminum transmission mounts. (I think too much flex from rear axle broke you transmission)

Nope, it broke on installing. The final tightening. It just cant work like that. There needs to be atleast somekind of polyretan or something softer in it. BTW the rear end is on all Powerflexes, so not very loose. Im going to put a Powerflex polyretan gearbox mounts also.
And sry no pics of it.
-
but handeling should have improved quite a lot.
Havent had a chance to test that out yet. But hopefully soon getting on a trackday again, lets see what the times tell us.
-
suvi123 well yes it seemes a lot better both handling and power wise. I will go on a track also on Sunday, so if its not raining i hope i can prove that with my laptime also.
-
So currently taking the intake apart. Planning on porting and making pulse chambers (credits to suvi123). :) Also going to remove the Medusa and heater plates and all unneccessary hose under there.
Heres the current intake -

Made a separate thread for a question about bigger TB on M42:

Any info would be very useful.

be sure to update us with pics of your selfmade pulsechambers!!:)

If you want ITBs, the euro S50 and S52 ITBs will work with minor modifications.
I'm not sure how doable shipping is for you, but AKG makes some harder rubber tranny mounts that use a metal cup to prevent the transmission from moving laterally while still damping vibrations.

Would S14 one work with some modding ?
I could get one rather cheap atm. :D

Just need new seals to assemble it all now. Will do that in the beginning of next month.
Also already figured out how im going to solve the Medusa issue.
The 16'' rims got a little update, matte black color - (http://www.beatking.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/evil5.gif)

Need to deal with vacuum, coolant and fuel hoses a bit, then i can install it.
-
Last week i got all the new hoses instead of the Medusa, installed the intake, got rid of the AFM restrictor, made a better CAI out of ventilation pipe ect. First had some problems with the TB, but when i got it working it was really nice. I felt something was a bit different and the sounds were really nice. :D It now makes this nice whistling sound above 3500 rpm, like a RAM-Air intake on a GSX-R hahaa, quite similar to it. Guess its from the polished intake... dunno.
Last year 402 meter time was 16,2 sec. This year 15,6 sec.
The only thing changed is the intake.
Im still on my crappy big 3,91 welded differential. If i got a quicker one i would surely get a better 402 m time.

Ok heres the final version of the intake.

Need to deal with vacuum, coolant and fuel hoses a bit, then i can install it.
hi dagger .
i am curious to know why the intake was modded in this way , with the blocked pipe coming out of the intake ???
awesome car you have.

Thanks. Heres the info about it, and it DOES work very nicely, i felt it right after the install -
''After the intake mixture (fuel and air mixture) enters a cylinder, the intake valve slams shut. In the stock manifold, the intake mixture starts to recoil off the back of the intake valve and back-flows up the intake runner to the plenum. But with a pulse chamber manifold, the intake mixture goes straight back into the pulse chamber because that is the path of least resistance. Next the mixture recoils off the back of the capped-off tube (the pulse chamber) and heads for the back of the intake valve ready to enter the engine when the intake valve opens. Since the intake mixture is ready to go into the cylinder, the cylinder filling is increased and the engine makes more power. From past Dyno testing, we can claim a 15% increase in midrange torque with this manifold.''
So heres a lil progress, no pics tho sorry ! :D -
* New brakelines (copper and rubber), they run from the interior throught the handbrake now;
* Suspension all fitted;
* Diff Powerflex mount;
* Exhaust got taped and reinstalled;
* Gear linkage modded and installed;
* Measured the rollcage dimensions again and ordered 10 more meters material;
* Electric fan install;
* Aluminium custom airbox;
While the car waits for rollcage we threw everything together (exept dash and windows) and tried it out a bit. Oh yeah it was also missing the exhausts last part, pretty noizy that way. :D Anyway it was awsome, the car has no grip at all and can easily be drifted til the end of 3rd gear. 4th gear i didnt have a chance to try yet... not so good roads there, and also bugs and insects start to hurt at that speed, hahahaha. :D
The car should be completed in a few days now. Then it will need some paint and a lot of cleaning.

E36 gearbox + 4,45 rear axle? ;)
Not just E36 gearox but M50B28 meaning Getrag 225 if im correct, that has the best ratio.
Along with big clutch and light flywheel ect... feels nice. :)

Rear axle transmision ratio is stock 4,11?

Don't you afraid get to the jail because of that? In Lithuania it is forbiden publicly wear and show Nazi and Soviet symbols. It's allowed only for education purposes and in the museums. I hope it's a bad joke...:confused:

Seconded. Except for that, the car looks GREAT. Nice job, but please remove the tape on the lamp.
-
Car turned out damn nice based on all the much work you had.
It looks really pretty now and I guess its a blast to drive specially because your rollcage which makes the car pretty stiff!
About the headlight, I think it doesnt matter as long as you just placed it there for the "style"...
Looking forward to see that E30 to proceed even further.

Shh. Its only a sticker to hold the broken glass in one piece. Chill. :P

Nice looking car, that's a lot of work you've done there...post some videos of it drifting!
I'm especially interested in the resonance chambers on the intake, that's a great idea. How well does it work?
I'm voting with the majority here...the tape is tasteless. Tape it in a racing x-pattern, it'll look much better! Free expression is a hallmark of our culture, but I'm sure my grandfather wouldn't appreciate that. A lot of his buddies were left behind in North Africa, Sicily & Italy. I'm told Anzio wasn't much of a vacation spot in 1944.

Those ''pulse chambers'' work very nicely. Strongly reccommended for any 1.8iS out there. Especially if you plan to race it. :)
As for the car... its not mine anymore. Sold it a while ago, since i did not have time for it for a while. And it has some serious upgrades now... V8 manual engine, Wisefab ect. A little picture of the car in action too -

At the moment it pure purpose-built, so it does not look that attractive. :P

I have a MM "pulse chamber" manifold on my car. I think it does make a noticeable difference in midrange torque, because my torque was reduced when I installed an intake cam and it came back with the intake . I also put a Dinan BBTB (bored throttle body) on at the same time.
