Title: Water in fuel tank

I think I may have used a fuel can that I now suspect had about a half-to-full-liter of water in it to get a dry car going.

So it was about 1 liter water to 5 liters fuel.

It turns over but splutters/misfires.

I drained the tank and left half the contents to stand in a clear plastic bottle to confirm there is water - the water would stay at the bottom as it is heavier.
So far, it looks like 100% fuel with no separation. I will check the other half.

I'll probably have to change the fuel filter too right?

Thoughts?

Yep, water loves to hang out in the fuel filter.

I checked at Kragen and they wanted $25 for an aftermarket M42 fuel filter.  rmeuropean.com had OEM Mahle filters for less than half that price.

I have a new BMW to go in.

Tried the other day to start it after filtering out the petrol and adding some Meths but nothing.
The Fuel filter is easy to change but what a bastard place to put it!

Changed the fuel filter, filled up with high octane fuel (with a bit of meths to neutralise any remaining water) and it spluttered into life then settled down fine.

As colin86325 says, looks like the filter just hung onto water and didn't let any fuel though.

Bitch to swap tho, even removing the Intake boot and PAS reservoir...
