Hey, I just want to say "THANKS!!" --I followed your writeup and unbolting the differential is definitely the way to go, the rear springs practically jump off the subframe (well, after getting some love from the spring compressor).

Anyway, thanks again for such a great, useful writeup.

Glad that was useful... some writeups I read suggested removing the trailing arms and all that.  No need as long as you can get the spring compressor in there.  Just allowing the diff to drop a bit gives you enough play to get them out with the spring compressor.  I can imagine, however, that if I had a different type of spring compressor that I may not have been able to get the compressor in there to remove the spring.

Installing the shorter H&R Sport spring was a breeze after getting the stock spring out!

What suspension did you put in?

I put in billy sport dampers and H&R sport springs... the part #29664 (for the original 318i), not the #50404 '318is' sport springs. I got a tip from a guy on E30tech (who had both) and confirmed with turner that the #29664s are a little more responsive.

it's an amazing upgrade... I can't believe the difference.

nb: having a little bottle jack to help with all this stuff is really a must-have!
