Title: Replace rod bolts
Post by: kenika65 on May 08, 2008, 11:30:16 PM
Hello all I am in the process of gathering all parts needed to bring my 200XXX 91is back to life.

Im thinking it would be a good idea to replace the rod bolts with ARP bolts because If the rod breaks loose it destroys the block?? Thanks

I have had no problems with the 91is except chain tensioner, water pump, spark plugs, cracked front subframe, right rear spring sagging, steering rack leak and the 4:10diff blew up. Other then that I have had no problems with it.

I am very impressed with its durability and economical performance through out the years.

Well now it is time to make sure my 91is stays alive for another 200+

Right now I have acquired a new front subframe because my original subframe was cracked on the passenger side motor mount bracket.
I have welded the TMS Reinforcement brackets on to prevent future stress cracks.

I have a steering rack from a 89i with new tie rods.

Oil pan gaskets, figured when it is on the lift and the subframe is out of the way it would be a good time to check the rod bearings and replace the rod bolts?

I have a new guiebo and rear shocks and shock mounts, and tranny mounts.

I also am looking for the best break pads of choice. I am interested in a good low, low dust pad... I dont want to have to change them often or have to clean my rims either, or eat my rotors up. So hopefully you can point me in the right direction. Thanks

Motor mounts are in excellent condition so I see no need to change, unless convinced otherwise...

Well Im only waiting on buying bolts and what ever else I should replace when I am in the crank case.

Thanks for the advice

Will post Pictures asap

Im pretty certain that you have to have the rod out of the block in order to change the rod bolts, because the new rod bolt has to be pressed into the rod.
Its a good modification in terms of rotational mass and as an added safety precaution.
ARP are the only ones that i would recommend, purely because they are the only ones ive had experience with, but i think allot of companys sell them these days.

For the brake pads, EBC Greenstuff pads are good for quick heat up, low wear and extremely low brake dust.

For the motormounts, if they are in good condition then i would leave them alone, especially if the car is a daily driver. There are upgrades available but most of them are aimed towards the track car end of the spectrum.

Hope that helps

PS: In future, when posting questions, could you try to use a question mark?
If somebody is just breezing through your post, they are allot more likely to reply if they dont have to search for your question.....like i did :):)
