Okay, so i have taken a look at damn near every M20 to M42 FW swap. I am looking for the right answers. All the write ups give the incorrect PN's. I have access to ETK since I work for a dealer. The FW PN listed is for a 89-91 325i automatic. So anyway, I ordered it. It looks like the image at the bottom, which is obviously incorrect. So after asking the old timers in my shop which E30's cam with single mass FW, they all say pre-85 (maybe 86) E30's. Has anyone done this and kept the PN's? I have the TO bearing and 325i starter pinion. Just need the FW. I am tired of ordering the wrong parts, so I want to wait for some assistance. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ETK works like Realoem, right? Can't you look up a late 80's 325 without air and use that number? I believe that realoem even states weather the flywheel is "twin-mass" or not. The drawings are pretty accurate as well.

well real-oem uses etk diagrams. but i would assume since it's a non-ac car that it would be non-us-spec. i have looked in the euro, south african and japanese catalog as well with no results. have you performed this modification? and is my assumption correct?

I just finished my M20 flywheel swap. My flywheel ended up being from an M20 Super Eta. Basically, as long as the single-mass flywheel will work with an M20 engine it should work just fine on the M42. They all have the same allignment of the ring gear/starter pinion, and that is all that really matters.
It's also been verified that M40 (Euro-spec) flywheels work too. Just to be safe, stick with only M20 single-mass flywheels.

I believe that the stock weight is about 20lbs or so...I'm probably wrong though.
You can shave them down to +/- 12lbs.
Search around the forum, couple of guys including myself have done the conversion.
Also, may I ask why you bought this part NEW?! It must have cost a fortune...

The stock M42 dual-mass flywheel weighs almost 29lbs; the stock M42 single-mass flywheel weighs about 20lbs, but with about $250 in machining can weight about 14-15lbs.
A single-mass M20 flywheel weighs less to begin with and can be more affordably machined. Plus the M20 single-mass flywheel is more common.

After 1987, any 325i/is came with a single mass flywheel with a sprung clutch.

My 1/86 325e had a single-mass flywheel. Check the ETK for exact details on cut-over dates.

see i am getting mixed stories. some say post 87, some say pre 87. so anyway, i ordered a 91 325i FW for starters. If that doesn't work, i'll go pre.

You can find a single mass for sale for like $70!

if im not mistaken. 325i's after 87 had single mass, and ETA's prior to 86 did also. i know my 85 325e had a single mass.

I mean if you're order this stuff new, you might as well get the 323i flywheel, its even lighter than the one from the 325i.
I know because it is the exact flywheel that I'm running :)

damn! my order from last week just arrived. i wish i would have known. oh well, i'll machine the hell out of it.
