Title: Cluster problem
Post by: silverblades181 on May 09, 2006, 08:13:48 PM
my instrument cluster is acting weird. the tachometer, gaz consumption, temperatur gauge and gaz gauge are not working. Some of the lights like park brake lights (yes its on) dont work with key in position 1. Speedometer works though... fuse is okay...

Speedo is run of a different fuse from the rest of the cluster.

The mpg guage, fuel, temp, tach are off fuse 21 inspect it very carefully or swap it if you're not so sure if it's not corroded/oxidized (if it's the stock fuse)

The ebrake warning light comes on along with all the other lights (unless I misunderstood what you typed) What do you mean by "position 1?"

well theres the ignition off, position 1 is when everything electrical is on (lights radio etc.) and position 2 is cranking position, I hope this is clearer

Off .... Radio, lights etc.....Warning lights...then start/run

The e-brake light comes on with the warning lights in position 2...I have forgotten the official way to label them so just bear with 0-1-2-3 :p

Is the Check Engine light on the same fuse as all the other warning lights? I just got a '91 318i and I think this bulb is shot. Am I correct in thinking it's in the little square between the speedo and tach?

We don't have that "Check" light which is tied in to the multi-information panel display since we don't have the system. No warnings for levels and bulbs being out.

We do have a "Check Engine" light which is next to the fog light indicator on the panel cluster and this indicates emission, air-fuel, 02, AFM etc issues.

e9nine,
Thanks for the reply. I guess my bulbs on that side of the cluster must be out. Nothing lights up on that side. What is the square in the middle above the SI lights? Sorry for the noob questions. This is my first E30 and it didn't come with an owner's manual. I plan on getting one shortly, but I thought I would get involved with the forum.

Thats where the Check light would be for the Check Panel but since the Check Panel didn't come on 318is, then it's nothing. Btw I found my problem, the wires fell off their support on the shift lever and rubbed against the Drive Shaft which cut them, and the fuse would just blow because of the short created when it touched the Drive Shaft. I welded them back in place and tied them with Tie Wraps, everything works fine now.
