Title: Engine problemas
Post by: RedHoodRidah on April 07, 2008, 06:13:58 PM
Where do I start?

Alright, Lately I have been noticing that everytime I am on the highway cruising after long trips and I get back to local roads I hear a loud tick coming from underneath the intake manifold sounding like the injectors. Engines runs fine and has all the power its got but just the noise is really loud and annoying. I don't really know how else to describe the noise but its pretty annoying. Its just after long trips on the highway though, through local roads I can drive it fine with no tick or any bad noise. I have plans to do the timing tensioner and pull the oil pan this week but the noise is not coming from the chain area nor the bottom end just underneath the intake manifold.

What could it be?

Is there like an alternative to not spending so much or maybe just to quiet them down a bit? Thicker oil maybe? Or some oil additive? I am running 10w30 right now castrol high mileage and Im really not feeling it. When I ran valvoline 10w40 the car was much more quiet. Hmm Time to go back to that I guess.

depends on the temperature. I ran 5w50 elf synthetic, but it burns a bit, so i moved to a 10w30.

compared to the elf oils, castrol and the like are considered a semi synthetic, my lifters quited down significantly after using elf oils, but in the end, worn lifters are worn lifters. Think of it as an opportunity to do the vw light weight lifters!

from another forum, I can get the link, if needed, regarding the m42 engine and oil testing. the oil should be mobil 1 10w40 or 15w50(synthetic). Mobil 1 lasted over all engines. The owner owns a 318is m42.
