I think that is the proper terminology - "clutch stop"... is anyone using one and if so, how do you like it and what useful purpose does it really serve?
I've seen them advertised online and from different vendors, where it is a part that screws into the driver's side floor board behind the clutch pedal. I guess it works by limiting clutch pedal travel?

Like you said, limits pedal travel.
Also allows you to move your seat back a little more if you normally "bottom out" the pedal.
A lot of BMW's have a "high" pedal, and the stop helps you to shift faster if you need to.
A really worthwhile mod to your car.

instead of buying one as advertised, could'nt I really just go to a hardware store and purchase a bolt/nut/washer combo w/ proper threads and make my own clutch stopper?

Yes, but you need to adhere some sort of durable cushioning material to it. And it needs to be wide enough to "catch" the pedal arm if it is mis-aligned
I found a nice one on e-bay for less than $10 that works well for me. The vendor sold a lot of them, and may still be selling them.

Just go for the $10 one man, it's no cheaper in the store LOL!
I've ordered on cos my E36 Twin Mass Clutch is weird at full depress.
The faster shifting is a nice side-effect.

The black piece is a rubber foot for a chair leg.

I like using a carriage style bolt myself. Little more surface area.

I went with the UUC clutch stop and I love it- though a DIY solution will work equally well.

I believe the 2inch one is PERFECT.
I used to have one, but ever since I switched over to the M20 clutch the engagement has changed.

Set it just past the full engagement point. You will eliminate the "excess" pedal travel.

You can source elevator bolts from McMaster-Carr.
About 5 years ago I was running one of these clutch stops with the impression that it would make me smoother driver. However, that was not the case; I have found that my shifting is much smother without the stop, and I would imagine faster and safer for downshifts. Reason being is that the time it takes for me to fully depress the clutch pedal and release it is the time required to rev match the engine for the next gear change. One can of course rev match with the modified clutch stop, but it requires one to pause for a moment with the clutch in, I found this hard to repeat. Without the stop, I simply press and release the pedal as fast as I can and the required time is just enough to rev match.
