I've long wondered why the S42 cannot be found in the ETK.
Is this a Motorsport entity only? I thought homologation was a requirement.
-
It is a requirement but they only need to make 2500 and they are quite pricey. I've heard that they run about $50,000 for a 170 HP detuned homologation model. 400 were sold in the UK and I don't know how many, if any, were sold in the US. The model is called a 320si.

is that one?

No,thats a 2litre version of the m3 engine.built for italy and portugal only, due to tax regulations for engine sizes above 2litres. Its called italo-m3
-
The s42 engine was never used in a e30 only in e36 320i it replaced there the s14.the only similarity to the m42 is the bloc, chaincase and parts of the cylinderhead!everything else, like camcarriers, solid lifters, bore, stroke, crank, cams, valves etc. Is different. Surely it depends which evolutionstep you look at. So,dont think you can use parts of the s42 in your m42..

Ummm I think there is a mixup here
320is E30 is basically a 325 with smaller 2 liter S14 engine rated at 200 hp. No idea how many were built but it was not an homologation special, it was made to circumvent italian tax laws that punished cars with over 2 liter engine. For example ferrari made models with 2 liter turbo for domestic market :D
320si E90 is homologation special for FIA WTCC series, atleast 2500 was made. 2 liter engine is bespoke for this model, 170 hp and no valvertronic but ordinary valvetrain and throttle body etc.
S42 engine was not used in either of those. It was only available from BMW Motorsport International beginning of 1995 until around 1998 and only in race car meant for supertouring/FIA Class II rules. S42 was never used in road going model.
That's why ETK does not have any info on S42. All information is on BMW Motorsport International parts catalogues. I suspect they might be available as PDF somewhere but most common are paper versions (which I have one for season 1995).

Boyracer--thanks for clearing that up. That was what I had guessed.

The S42 has a unique cylinder head. This has to be used on the homologation model. Here's a link to info about the E90 320si engine.

The S42 is not listed in the 2006 320si in realoem.com How about this little item - "Additionally, to save approximately 10kgs of weight and lower the car’s centre of gravity, the cylinder head cover is made of carbon fibre." It has to be bolted down to keep from floating away!

D.Clay, that's because the 320si doesn't use the S42, it uses the N45. It's a completely different engine, as mentioned earlier in this thread.
