Beautiful car.  How do you like the MTech-1 steering wheel?  Was the conversion pretty straightforward and did removing the airbag cause any difficulties?

in France and Europe, we never heard about any airbag in an e30, and the 318 is is originally equiped with Mtech1 steering wheel.

You guys are lucky.  All US spec 318is came with a driver airbag.  Do you like the MTech1 steering wheel?  What rates are your custom springs?  They look very stiff.

I actually have a 90mm rallye one in my car but I'm working on an adaptator to put my original steering on a 6 holes hub to have an OEM appearance but a better position to drive, the Mtech1 is beautiful but I'm searching for an Mtech2

what do you mean by on the wheel?
the only thing I know is the fact the measure has been down on the spring alone, not assembled to the vehicle...

Dont you think then that rear springs are too soft?

I'm confident about my choice, springs and shocks are in the same configuration as most of rallyemen choose regarding the type of roads we have in our region, and my car will be first a street use car with some track days during the year...

my tires: Hankook ventus Z211 205/55r15, the only size allowed in France for 15 inches wheels on e30

wow that thing is going in for some nice work. Once done it will be sick.

I seen on your other thread you were thinking about paint but I was thinking your original paint was bad or something. Looks pretty clean I wouldn't respray it another color unless that what you really want.

Do they use these springs ratios on the BMW E30 or you will be the first?

I was speaking about M3 e30 Rallyemen owners so I won't be the first, I prefer choose setups (for suspension as for engine) which have been ever used and validated by the experience of professionnals
noticed that in our old country roads are usually as old as the country itself so suspension has to be adjustate with that factor.

You are absolutely correct that for bumpy roads you need plenty of well damped rebound.  You have to keep the tire on the road. Cant waitto see it and hear alll about it in use!

how hard was the sound deadening to remove, looks like you did a good job

I have found that dry ice works the best for removing sound deadening, get a couple of big chunks place it on the deadening for a couple of minutes then hit with a hammer and it will chip up, then go back with a degreaser to remove the rest of the residue.

This project looks great sounds like a really fun car!

Air bag was available on special order basis, otherwise MTech I was oem streering wheel.


Looks really nice project. You have done great job there :)

We have here in Europe one advantage over US models is the general lack of accesories on Euro models. For example i don't not have the following "normal US-spec things:

A/C
Sunroof
powersteering
power windows
power trunk lid
power central lock
etc.

I suppose Euro spec cars are quite a lot lighter than their US-spec brothers.

If You are planning to use Megasquirt i suggest you to take a look VEMS http://www.vems.hu
It's quite similar system compared to Megasquirt, it only have a little bit better processor. Lot's of hardware available for it. You can tune it with same Megatune program as megasquirt.

BTW. do you have BMW OEM towing hook in your car? i suppose it can be seen in one of the pictures you post here.

I suppose BMW is the same compared to all other Motronic system cars. I have removed airbags from several US spec Porsche 944 Turbos. You just need to remove air bags and after that you need to cut one wire from Motronic box and connect that wire to another wire (don't remeber which wires have to check them out). If you just remove air bags car won't start. That is mainly because motronic gets an impression you have had an accident and air bags has been blown this causes automatically the shut down of the engine and also fuel pump will stop. But it's quite easy thing to by pass this and all electric work can be done in few minutes.

Have you checked out 318I flywheel (for our american friends, not US spec wheel)? I suppose it is already what you are looking for.

+1 on the VEMS.  Has a built-in WBO2 circuit, just wire up a Bosch UEGO and you're ready to go.

Nice bit of work going on there...looks like your car started clean and is getting cleaner by the day!  Those wheels are striking in gloss black!  Definitely post more pics after you get them mounted.
