Hi all
a strange thing when im revving up my engine - it makes ticking noise that appears to come from the engine's head?
the car pulls fine, rev's up nice and idles firmly on 850-900 rpm.
if i rev up the engine - the ticking noise appears, but once the engine is steady on its higher RPM ticking will go away.
happens both under load or in neutral.
any ideas?

maybe the lifters or the timing chain tensionner ??

The engine is a 1996 M42, could it be timing chain allready? the sound is like coming from the engine side that is close to the firewall, not to the front of the engine
the lower pan was dropped - yes, i had to to complete the engine swap
(i did not forget this - my Canon EOS 30D died on me two days ago and all the pix are inside...)

what kid of sound is it? sometime electric components can do clicking sounds. try some sort of cleaner like seafoam to decarbonate the engine and see if that changes anything to the sound.
are there any other symptoms?

i installed the engine a week ago, before installing it i cleaned the intake mani and trottle body.
im using Mobil Synth S motor oil.
the sound is like a piston or something else that is ticking, little like detonation sound, but not exactly...
in addition - it may be related? i have this massive oil leak from the timing case seal....

could just be a ticking hyrdo lifter. i have the same thing on and off. try running one of those detergents on your next oil change. significantly reduced the ticking, in fact its almost gone now.

could also be the injectors clicking, very common on bmw's.
