Sorry to post here, can not find where to start a new thread, need to know what lubricant to use in gear box(manual 5 speed), as I want to replace it.

I would imagine yours takes ATF fluid.
That is what mine uses.
If you pull the drain plug you will probably have red stuff come out.
Other possibilities, you could get this nasty stinky snot out of there, which would be gear lube.
I believe no matter what you have in there you can use Redline manual transmission lube (MTL) or any other good synthetic manual transmission fluid.

i dont know much about tranny fluids but to start a new thread you can go to http://www.m42club.com/forums find the appropriate place and there will be a new thread button on top left of the page

Amsoil ATF is regarded as the best ATF out there on many auto sites. Many BMWers use redline, but it tends to show more wear metals, despite having a stellar basestock and additive package.
Im running amsoil and shifts are perfect in my MT.

In a recent excursion under my car (complete with lots of choice swear works and broken exhaust header to cat bolts) I suddenly remembered the location of the sticker, its on the bottom of the bell housing.
Which you'll see yours when you crawl under to change yours out.
