i have a 318 is with a 170000 miles on it and i want to put these cams in but i want to know if i have to rebuild the bottom end or will it be able to handle the added power being so old
-
where did you get the cams from. Schrick themselves or does someone self them?
-
The engine will probably handle it with no problem. Hot cams don't really put much more stress on the engine.
-
i havnt bought them yet but im getting them from vac motorsports, and i was asking if the engine could handle it because i was told that i would blow up the bottom end if i put them in
-

I don't think cams alone will cause any problems with the bottom end. Power increase is only about 15-20% with chip and that power itself does not really hurt the bottom.
Biggest load to con rods, pistons etc is when piston is at TDC between exhaust and induction cycles. Then there is nothing much above piston to slow down the piston that is going up and then changes it's direction. Realistically this phase is not affected by camshaft at all.
What will break bottom ends is high revs. Small unbalanced masses on crankshaft can be very bad, lubrication might not be sufficient to maintain bearing surface clearances. Also con rods must be able to change piston's direction faster, causing higher stresses and fatigue.
Shrick cam set is around 600€ in germany. Because they are so tame (256 degrees and 10,4 mm of lift I think) similar or bit more aggressive cams can be reground from originals. You can get set of used M42 camshafts for 10-20€ / pair and regrinding them in Finland should be around 100-150€ for cam.

do you have any more detail on these cam grindings or a link...
i'm in ireland....
cheers

Replied in private but others might be interested too.
Only international vendor I know of doing regrinds is Dbilas. Pair of M42 cams reground to 262 degrees with 10,2 mm lift costs you 320€.
That is half the price of new Shricks and those cams are 256 degrees I think so regrinds are quite comparable.
I think there are plenty of local places everywhere doing regrings, you just have to find them :)
