Title: replacing gauge lights
Post by: stever318is on January 04, 2008, 06:39:30 PM
Ok I've replaced several on other e30's but this is airbag car. I always just pulled the steering wheel the bezel and the piece held on by the two silver nuts. So
do you still have to remove the steering wheel or do you just squeak it out of there with the wheel still on. If removal necs. How??

thanks

Many people on here have removed the cluster without removing the steering wheel . I've done  it probably 4 or 5 times .
You have to be careful but it can be done. Some say it's easier to remove the air bag wheel but I've never attempted this .
good luck

It is easy enough to remove the airbag wheel, but you can get the cluster out without taking it off.

one major tip i can provide for removing the air bag make sure u unplug the air bag so it doesn't  blow in ur face

the plug is located behind a plastic panel about 3x1 inch under the column and then after u use a star key to remove the air bag put the key on and take the wheel off the ( the key is need because e30s have a security lock so the wheel cant come off)

also mark the wheel with the shalf so that u can put it back on correctly

before you unplug it, make sure you let the car sit for about 20 minutes. This will ensure that the SRS system is completely discharged and there is no danger of it blowing up in your face. Otherwise, it is very straightforeward. Make sure the key is in the on position and the stalks are in their neutral positions, or the wheel won't come off.
