Hi guys,
I am New here and this is my first post so please be gentle :)
I am thinking of getting a new Beemer after getting rid of my old Alpina touring and was looking at the compact 318ti. I just needed some advice on engines and was looking at either:
* 1994-1995, 1796 cc, I4, 16 valves, 140 hp/103 kW, 175 Nm
* 1996-1999, 1896 cc, I4, 16 valves, 140 hp/103 kW, 180 Nm
Which of these would be more tunable? I was thinking of using Mega Squirt, 4 branch, Full Stainless exhaust, possibly some head work and an induction kit.
Which would give better results?
Thanks in advance,
O

The m44 will likely end up giving yo better results simply by having more volume. Head work, a chip and a re-ground cam would be your best bet on either.
What type of induction are you talking? Megasquirt is overkill unless you are doing major changes, even Downing Atlanta and the 2.1 Stroker by Metric Mechanic use a factory ECU with a custom chip. Until you break 220hp or more the stock injection will work fine, you will getter mileage and better emissions. Even above that HP you could change injectors and get more, but you are stressing the fuel delivery system based on what Downing Atlanta has seen.

I was planning to use MS so that I can Run ITB's. My plans were to do some light head work, Cams, 4-Branch and full stainless, and of course the throttle bodies.
I like the idea of a supercharger but I would rather do that on a higher capacity engine. I want to build this as a daily driver and most of all a road car. I may use it for Autocross every now and again or a track day once or twice a year. I want to base this car around suspension and driveability possibly touching close to 160bhp.

Also I am looking at the 318ti models and noticed that these have 2 different power outputs, there is a 140bhp model and a lower powered one i think its only 112bhp (but dont quote me)
What is the difference between these engines? Can I just add a chip on a lower power model and get the higher power output?

Yeah, ITB's complicate things a bit.

is it the same procedure to install MS on the M44? or would the OBD - II security issues cause problems?

Megasquirt is a whole new world.
OBD2 can be scavenged from another car. Megasquirt you are pretty much starting from scratch.
