Hey guys, would the getrag 240 fit in an E36 without any modifications?

Just wondering.

Getrag 240 came in several flavors, 1 for the M10 320i and early 318i's.  Later they used a 240 with a different front housing for the E30 318is.  The transmission is an overdrive unit .8:1 in 5th.

The transmission should bolt up to the E36 M42 motor but I think it will slow the car down because IIR the E36 has a 1.1  5th gear.  I would expect the diff ratio in a E36 is ~  low to mid 3.x:1.   I think the E36 used a ZF trans so the length and mounting may be different, you may have drive shaft issues.

The driveshaft issues is key. I just want to make sure it fits the car. I have the later 240 with the correct bellhousing :)

yeah you need the e36 slave cylinder, and need to switch the selector shaft joint thing. also lossen the nut on the driveshaft and push it all the way back. And you gearing is going to be insanly short

What is the advantage of using an E36 tranny in an E30 318is?

You would be able to use a 240mm flywheel and clutch. I guess you could change the diff to match the e36 gears and it would work out the same as far as gearing goes.
