I haven't heard anyone talking about the S42 engine in a while so I figured I would stir something up.
I found some pictures on a random German website, I think, it looks like German to me but I'm not sure. http://indirici.net/drag-yarisindan-goruntuler-t2575.html
Here it is, S42 powered carbon fiber bodied (drum roll please)

Repost it where?
I think what he meant was, this has been posted before..
But awesome nonetheless!

I thought the S42 was the Touring Car Championship motor for the 3 Series. That requires homologation. Anyone know what, when, where, etc. the homologation models were made and sold.
-
very nice! i want one

I thought it was a race only motor and that it was never put into a street car.
E28/34 M5 - S38
E30 M3 - S14
E36 M3 - S50/S52
E39 M5 - S62
E60 M5/6 - S85
E95 M3 - S65
I don't think I'm missing anything.

They had one but didn't add very much power to the stock engine. Boyracer has one this is his web site http://www.jannousiainen.net/hobbies/bmw/e36_318is/index.htm and http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1960

If the S42 is comparably priced to other manufacturers special engines, it probably costs about $20-$25K. I imagine the reason they never updated the head on the M42 for series requiring homologation was Mercedes and the others were using 6 cylinders. I'd love a 180 HP M42 that ran on unleaded. I imagine the reason was that 2.5 - 3.0 liter 6 cylinders are smoother with more torque. BMW's have become more of a luxury car and the new ones are pretty heavy.

very nice engine....if only we could upgrade our m42 into s42s!

another thread of someone who's modded their car with s42 bits (http://www.unitedbimmer.com/forums/e21-e30/2825-buying-e30-but-what-model.html)
http://www.gttechnic.com/catalog.html this site, which this site has had some contact with.
http://www.kempower.be/racedif/raceengines.htm
this place is shady, they say that they build these engines, but i've emailed them a couple of times with no response.

really? if you've got some information on them i'd love to hear it. but i've tried to contact them several times and never heard anything back. their and website seems a little out of date.

Do anyone built his motor up like the s42 which exists videos of it in the net?
I wanna build em up like the s42 but with less mods...
Sorry for pushing the thread

$$$$$

The Lotus in the first pic is here in South Africa, check the blue VW in the back has a GP registration which is Gauteng Province. I need to dig up the magazine that has the article in it, to get more info
-
I wonder where they got a FWD trans to mount that engine to?
Dave
-
you mean a transaxle, a lotus elise has one stock and it looks to me like a custom bell housing was made for it to attach to the s42
-
WTF is that excruciating whine in the video? tranny?

You aren't.

It did not. And it came in no production vehicles.

Supertourer regs were for specific series, eg DTM, BTCC, STW, TOCA. Here are the Supertourer Regs (http://www.fia.com/resources/documents/2096014687__262_a.pdf). I understand there are homologation papers for individual models, and the tech regs allow for the mods. I do not think the papers homologate 'hot bits' in the usual sense. For example, when BMW wanted to run the 4 door 318iS, there was an initial run of 2500 produced to homologate the 4 door sedan bodyshell with 16 valve engine. I think Boyracer in this forum has one of these.
I have no idea where the homologaton papers would be available from by the local associations such as the BTCC.
Reg 4.2.1 allows teams to run the specially developed race engines, rather than soup up the base engine they shove out to customers. As we know, the BMW Supertourer race engine is the S42 which is based on the standard M42 engine in the 318iS. It is a BMW Motorsport only engine that was never offered in a production model unlike the S14 in the E30 M3. It is also why BMW was able to use the S14 in the E36 chassis.
Engine
4.2.1) The engine must be of the same make as the car and must be homologated by the FIA in Super Touring.
