Title: Startup whine

On cold starts I've been noticing a high pitched whine for a few seconds or so. It goes away immediately and I can't hear anything wierd going on when I'm driving. As it's been getting colder the noise lasts longer (5-7sec) but it still goes right away. I'm using Delo 400 15w-40 because my timing chain is fairly worn and I need good lubrication, could that be the cause?
Any ideas would be great.

I dont know whats is wrong but mine makes the same noise. Any help would be great for us.

Have you replaced the tensioner? If you haven't pulled your lower pan in a while that probably wouldn't be a bad idea. My car sounded like a lawn mower running on diesel before I replaced my tensioner. That of course was in the summer months, I'm not too keen on the climate in Oregon during November. I ran pretty thick oil in the warm weather, I'm not sure of the implications of running thicker oil in the winter; maybe it is playing a role in your noise.

It could be a slipping accessory belt.  I always have to tighten my belt when it starts to get colder.

Of course a slipping belt would be more of a squeal than a whine, but onomatopoeia isnt the greatest form of diagnosis. :p

a growl at first startup, quieting within 1-2 seconds is the tensioner pressurizing.  A speed related tick would be the lifters.  A tick that gets louder with engine temperature is the injectors.

A whine that is just at the very start, from what Ive seen, is a slightly incorrect adjustment or wetness on the accessory belts.  The alternator is heavily loaded after sitting in the colkd and then doing a cold start... so its putting a lot out.  If the belts are glazed, loose/tight, etc., they will whine a bit.

Check your belts
