Hey, Name is rip. I have a 91 318IS (just picked it up) I have owned 4 X E34's and 3 X E30 325's. i have a Porsche 924S, 95 525I,93 315IS, 91 318IS and a 84 325E Turbo running 15Psi. Been lurking around the forums the past couple days and managed to work out 90% of the issues i was having with the 318. Did a Heater plate delete and blocked off the heater lines. Re plummed all the vacuum hoses, IAC and PCV. Still dealing with a rough idle and some clacking in the top end. I assume the lifters are HLA's so I cant do any adjustment. Checked for vacuum leaks and cand find any. Idle is simply a little lopy, maybe -/+ 200Rpm. Anyway, great forum, looks likse everything has already been asked and I will probably find my answers doing a search before I get a relly. or maybe I just need to suck out all the gas thats been sitting in the car and put some high test in it.

The lifter tick is just one of those annoying, inherent M42-isms. A few lucky people have a quiet motor, but most of us don't. Nothing to get worried over though.
The lopey idle can be due to an aging O2 sensor, and a gunked up idle control valve. Try pulling off the ICV and running some WD40 (or carb cleaner, though it might be a little caustic) through it.
And of course, welcome to the club! It should tell you more than you ever wanted to know about the most underrated E30 ever made.
