I think both E30 and E36 M42 has same displacement of 1795 cm3. M44 in E36 after 1995 is larger, 1895 cm3.
Few improvements in E36 M42 over E30 M42
- 6 mm valve stems -> lighter valvetrain and smaller friction losses
- two knock sensors -> can be tuned closer to knock limit
- Variable lenght intake (DISA) -> improves low rpm torque
-
Was VANOS ever offered on the M42? That would be a "FUN" project to wire that in haha

Correct, the M42 is 1.8 liters.
The M44, which is more or less a tweaked M42 is 1.9 liters.

No, M42 and M44 always had fixed camshaft timing.
I have been thinking possibilities of buying el cheapo M50/M52/S50 cylinderhead with VANOS and chopping off two cylinders at the end.
Possibilities of why it would not work are unlimited... Bolt patters, camshaft manufacturing, coolant channels etc etc.
But it would be a heck of a project :D

wow thanks guys!!
