This is the wiring color codes for the 91, others should be similar.
Note*
My car did not have the original head unit, but I am sure the rest of the wires are stock and that is what this is based on. However I will give instructions as to how to figure it out further below.
If your wiring seems to match just use the guide, if not, skip to the end.
As always, be carefull, do not blame me if something goes wrong, and good luck.
German speaker codes (some radios have this, others may not);
RV = Right Front
LV = Left Font
RH = Right Rear
LH = Left Rear
Color codes;
Power wiringBrown = Ground, normally black in most cars
White = Antenae (sends 12v to raise the ant. when stero is in radio mode)
Purple = 12v ACC (Switched) Can also be red.
Red/Green = 12v constant (Non-Switched) Can also be yellow on some cars.
Red/Gray = Illumination (sends 12v when headlights are on to activate dimmer) Could also be orange.
Speaker wiring
Right Front = Blue and:
White = Pos.
Red = Neg.
Left Front = Yellow and:
Silver (or gray) = Pos.
Red = Neg.
Right Rear = Blue and:
Brown = Pos.
Black = Neg.
Left Rear = yellow and:
Brown = Pos.
Black = Neg.
If your system does not match or you want to double check ;
You will need a voltmeter, a screwdriver, and an 8mm(?) socket and ratchet to figure it all out.
First take a voltmeter and set it to read voltage. I used the head of the door stop pin for a ground.
With the car off, find the constant 12v. pos. When you find it, wrap it up good as you do not want to blow a fuse or the radio by accidentally hitting it on something. Try the red/green or yellow first as these are the most likely wires.
Turn on the ingition to ACC settings. And try to locate another wire with 12v pos. Try the purple/gray or red first as these are the most likely wires. Wrap and mark this wire.
Turn on the headlights and again, find another 12v pos. wire. Try the red/gray or orange first as these are the most likely wires. Mark and turn off the lights and the ACC.
The scrwdriver is to pull the speakers to look at the wires. The grills and panels come out easy in most cases. Except the left front, which needs the lower dash, and hood latch removed. To remove the kick panels, remove the visible screw then push/slide the panel forward so the lower rear corner pulls free from under the door sill, then pull down and out. On the driver side, pull teh lowest dash panel, and the panel just inder the steering collumn. Then remove the hood latch. Once inside, remove the speaker and check the color. Re-install is reversed.
On the rear, pull the right rear speaker first as both speaker wires run across underneath this one, so you may only need to remove the one speaker in back.
This only leaves 2 wires to figure out. Look in the trunk and do what you can to see the ant. look for a wire (other than the ant. wire itself) odds are it is white. It should be the same color at the stereo, leaving only one wire, the negative wire, which is most likely black.
