Title: Daily Driver E30 318 turbo project
Post by: ApocolypseAutoEngineering on October 17, 2007, 12:43:57 AM
Hey guys I'm new to this sight but I've been modding e30's for a while. I've had some retardedly fast e30s but all of them were m20 swaps or m20 turbos. I've come to aquire my Dad's 91 318is that I've driven for years and love that little thing. Its probably the most well rounded car for handling I've ever had the privelage of driving. :D Now that its my next project and I'm not as familiar with the details of the M42 as other motors I'd like to just simply ask for some feedback on any problems or ticks that this engine might have on say 8-10lbs of boost. I'm going to try a set up I made for a Mazda 3 with a t25 and a medium size intercooler. That thing spooled up at just 1500rpm and was incredibly reliable. What I'm really looking for in this car is still that nimble feeling I've always loved and crave for everytime I drive it, but some extra power so when I take this this and cut it loose in the Blue Ridge parkway in the Appy Mountains. I'll post pictures as often as possible with the project and will keep yall informed.

Same color as yours. Anyways sofar it has H&R springs, a set of bilstein sport shocks, a full reiger body kit (the e46 M3 lookalike)

http://www.psgbodystyling.co.uk/gallery.php?man=Rieger&ref=E46 M3 Look&make=BMW&model=E30&image1=bmw_e30_rieger_e46m3look_f.jpg&image2=bmw_e30_rieger_e46m3look_r.jpg[/URL]

I shaved the side mouldings on it, put a badboy eye brow, and molded a funtional scoop that closely resembles a second gen rx-7 turbo's. I tried to make the the custom molding look as suptle as possible. Now I'm waiting for the car to get painted so I can take for a ride for the first time in 3 years. I should soon be trying to locate some staggered wheels for it and am considering just changing it to five lug through E28 spindels and brakes. (Man I love E30s).:D.
  As for the turbo kit:

T25 or 28 w/ waste gate

Intercooler 29x6x3 ebay

91' Mustang 36lb injectors

Greddy super Sequential BOV  (too sweet of a sound not to have)

E34 M5 factory in tank pump(goes right in)

Megasquirt I or II(gotta see benefits at time of purchase)

325is oil cooler retrofited (salvage yard)

Aeromotive AEI-13109 fuel pressure regulator

Ford racing 91' Stang Maf sensor( should easily work with megasquirt)

Factory E36 individual coil packs (thanks to your sight)

and I fabricate everything else.

If you check on all these parts you should find them relatively cheep with good results on power, reliability and smoothness. I try to use as many factory parts because they simply run better than most aftermarket parts that match or superceed its price.

Depending on the power it dishes out it'll stay with the 4.10 or I might go for the 3.76 to get a bit more top end.

No extravagent color or protrusions just the stock diamond black throughout the whole car, besides I can't afford an e46 M3 so i might as well make mine look like one. j/k. Actually the body of the car still flows well with the kit and scoop. The scoop's curvature coincides nicely with the hood's, it doesn't stand out like if it was added.  just wait for the pictures it'll be about 2 weeks.

Let me know how your M20/325i oil cooler retrofit goes.

I've heard mixed opinions saying you can't add an oil cooler easily because of the oil flow/direction?

Well regardless, I have to add a high and a low pressure line for the turbo once I figure a simple way of routing it to the the turbo, simply add the neccesary plumbing and the oil cooler between the low pressure out and turbo. In routing it between the turbo outlet and engine, it prevents the motor from heating up too much especially in warmer climates like were I live in Florida. Another good thing about the Aeromotive company, they pretty much have all the neccessary fittings, adapters and hoses for that application. If I remember right the oil canister should have a pressure sensor plug much like the m20's. I currently don't have the car in my possesion so if anyone can varify please do.

Exactly. The only real hard part is to change the hoses and fittings on the oil cooler.

Yea it took 3 days and an entire can of bondo to get it right. I didn't use a power sander and did it by hand to get the ridge where it mends to the hood  to match the ridge line of the hood. The really difficult part was to go from a ridge to flush with the hood.

Soon enough I'll post the pics, my car is in Miami with my dad getting it painted and I'm in Gainesville going to school. I'm looking for a decent bodyshop to paint the car with the proper enamel diamond black. Most shops I found only do paint and clear.

UPDATE!! The car is in a body shop getting painted. My dad tried to surprise me but spilled the beans that he was changing the color to an iridescent blue by dupont. Pics should be up by next week. I can't wait to see how the car is going to look.

grills should go back to black, and the center kidney should be the OEM one... other then that it looks alright for that kit... the hoodscoop is definitely interesting though, don't think i like it, that and it isn't centered. I am interested in the engine though:D

I actually decided to put the turbo off for a little while and am going to take the correct aproach because I've been reading at least 3 to 4 hours a night about this engine and what boosting it with stock internals would do to the life of this thing. So i decided to build an engine on the side for the turbo so I could get the results I'm looking for. What I wanted was the agility of the 318 with gobbs of torque like I had on my six's. In that I decided to do a stroker with low compression for boost. I think it would help out with a very linear power and torque curve. I'm not trying to run some stupid amount of boost because I don't want a huge turbo so it won't lag that bad.

For now I'm going to put on the markd93 chip, reground cams, mustang injectors, the tb coolant bypass, electric fan, a 4.44 rear end(I only get on the high way once a month), and some underdrive pullys (Hoping if you could make them exist for the e30).:o

I'll be looking into the under drive pully's once this Caliper bracket thing has gone through. you could also look into one of my crankshafts if your looking to stroke it:).

What makes the scoop functional?  Is it the air source for the IAC?  Did you need to cut a hole in the hood to make something under it fit?

I cut a slit and bent it up so water wouldn't just come pouring in but for now its just to keep the intake manifold temp down a little considering I live in Florida. Eventually I will be fabricating a channel to rout the air to where the turbo will be. Since the turbo is usually mounted high in the engine compartment there is minimal air circulation above the turbo adding unwanted heat to the intake flow and it would help get the air to circulate better in that area preventing a few degrees of added heat and aiding the intercooler a bit.

Yeah, you wouldnt want to bust the welds on your intake manifold.

Nice and subtle too :D

Yea it is a little bit but cut me a break, that car is the first car I did real custom body work to. The bumpers are my favorite though because I manged to put the stock umper skeleton underneath and the entire kit goes on and comes off just like stock. That to me was an achievement. the entire kit was reinforced to withstand higher speeds and actual accident(hoping they won't happen).

personally I like it you have done well on your first attempt and the mods while some are not subtle are thought out and executed better than many I've seen before. Keep at it and make the car your own we will all be watching your progress with great interest.

A less obvious alternative would be to remove the hood seal strip which would help draw air up and out.   I don't think that you'd see much of a benefit at the intake manifold in any case.

Mind you its only for the time being until I drop in the turbo, then it will have a more beneficial use cooling the turbine.

Just a few things for you to think about, or maybe you already have.

Why do you want to keep the temperature of the turbo down?
Turbines are more efficient at higher operating temperatures, turbos are designed to run very hot, it is how they work and I do not see any benefit to having more airflow around them.  Cold intake air on the other hand is more important.  I can't imagine any way to draw air from your scoop for intake purposes.

Where is your intercooler going to be that it will see air from this scoop?
Some subarus use top mounted intercoolers, but there is no space in our engine bays for this.

You may like the looks of the scoop, and that is your own matter and a matter of taste, but I do not think it can be described as functional just because air can get into the engine bay through it.

I think you should work on that scoop more and get it right.

Its like a lazy eye or saggy breast.  With body work its not measure twice cut once.  Its measure 10 times, make a template, use masking tape to line it up precisely, quadruple check those lines, and then finally you are ready to make additions because the human eye is very capable of judging when something isn't centered perfectly.  A purposely off-center scoop such that it would be above the factory air box would be easier to install accurately since it is not an attempt to center, if you know what i mean.

Is it just me or is the bumper higher on the drivers side?
