Why should I buy an m42 powered e30? There's one for sale near me a 1991 red 318iS. Heres a link to some crappy pictures on craigslist.
http://tampa.craigslist.org/car/445321123.html
I use to have 2 other e30's but recently sold them. I had a 1984 325e"s" It was stripped out and fun to drive. My other e30 the 1986 325 was completely gutted and was fun as hell to drive.
I'm just worried that if I get this 318is I'm going to be extremely dissapointed in the power department.
I really just need a DD for good 2 or 3 years. I don't need to drive fast but knowing my car is realllly slow just makes me angry. :D
Please convince me into getting this car. Cause I think it would be a amazing DD.
PS: I hate the wheels on it, and after I bought it they'd be promptly sold and replaced with either 15in weaves or the lamer 14in weaves.
-
..people who are usually convinced into getting what they don't like don't keep the acquisition for long.
If you don't like it - don't get. Not trying to be curt but there's no other way say it.
The 318iS is faster than an eta. I owned both at the same time. The 318iS can be just about as fast as a 325i/iS. The 318iS is low on torque and thus deceivingly slow to most. Most also don't take care of their 318i/iS cars and they are in bad tune. A nicely maintained m42 is a nice daily driver.
I have owned m20b27, m20b25 and m42b18 cars and like them all. Most hate everything except for the m20b25. I yearn to get a cheap m10 to go whup butt with in auto-x someday. (I deliberately left the s14 out of this conversation as that's just another can of worms)
G. luck

Wrong link posted. If you are looking for a "stoplight car" the 318 is not for you. This is a momentum car. Great through the turns, 2nd and 3rd gear are probably as fast as the 325. Maybe you should drive one first.
-
Well, I'm pretty sure both my 325e's would crap on almost all 318's m42 or m10. They weighed less than a stock 318.
Like the first guy said if you get convinced into buying a car then you probably won't like it. I just can't find a 325i for the life of me. And this thing is close and in decent shape for the price.
EDIT: FIXED THE LINK!!
-
If you had modded the hell out of the ETA's then they might be quicker than the M42. I have had some stoplight races with ETA's in the past and they got smoked. The M42 cars are by no means fast, but the ETA's are still slower.
That said, go check the car out. If the motor makes any diesel / grinding noises then you are in for potentially expensive engine maintenance. People let one little $40 part go, and it causes $500+ in parts to poop out, possibly $1000+ if it gets to a certain point. Namely, the timing chain tensioner piston goes, allowing the chain to slap around, wearing out all parts in the timing train, usually shattering some roller shells, which can later be sucked into the oil pump, destroying only the front half of the motor if you are lucky. Phew...
Go check it out. The M42 is not forgiving like the M20 cars, you have to revv the dogshit out of it. It is very rewarding, but takes some getting used to. Either way, an E30 is still loads of fun!
-
Well, I only got the guy down to 1500 cash. I don't think that's that bad of a deal for a 1991 318is with only 120k on it. Both my eta's had over 160k on them.
However he says the blower only worked on number 4 but now it doesn't work at all. Could it just be the resistor? I really don't wanna have to get a new blower.

I just traded my 1986 ETA for a M42 powered e30. I have to say that my ETA had full suspension and the M42 takes the corners about twice as good. I feel alot less understeering with the less weight up front... Oh why do you need someone to convice you? These cars speak for themselfs.. i gave up my 2 grand in parts to get a better rig to start with. Ok so ETA = 6 cylinder torque gas hog. M42 takes 92octane but holy smokes i save a ton on gas even at 3 dollars a gallon. That price for that M42 is crazy cheap. If you liked your eta's then you will never go back once you have an M42. I'm speaking from experience here.

That's the inspiring words I was looking for! From a fellow eta owner none the less. :D

The guy i got my M42 from wanted 2000 for it even though it was broken down on the side of the road.. I just gave him my runner and bought a new driveshaft and tranny for it.. in the process i put a new clutch in and reoiled everything (Redline in rear end and tranny, didnt do synthetic on the motor yet because i know im going to tear into the timing chain) and the car amazes me everytime i take it on the back roads S turns. I took it because the body was 100% perfect and the interior was 95% perfect. The kid i got it from didnt know anything about mechanics so i came out ahead after i spent 1500 on the car in new parts.
-
nearly 30MPG on the highway?
-
Drive the car, if you don't like it...then you don't like it and move on. 120k is pretty damn low, I have over 100k more than that and I just did a track day with no problems at all.
-
nearly 30MPG on the highway?
more than enough reason IMHO. $3 per gallon. 30 miles for 3 dollars aint bad
-
If you test drive it, take it up to redline. Or else you will not be happy, you cannot drive it lazy and expect it to run fast. Great daily driver though no matter how you slice it. Not many cars get this kind of mileage, performance and luxury.
As has been said, it is a momentum car, but they are not bad. Keep in mind you were comparing stripped out cars to one with a full interior.
If the car is decent, that price is a steal.
Go in with an open mind and drive the piss out of it, the car with thank you and beg for more. The owner may freak, but who cares :)
-
Do people actually buy cars without driving them, based on what a group of obviously opinionated forum members say. This is M42Club.com. Do you really believe we are going to say anything other than we like 318i's and 318is's.?
-
I test drove a track-ready 325is with a cage and no interior, a 325es, and an m10 318i before I bought my car. The 325is was amazing in a straight line, but in the corners it felt rather ponderous in the nose. The es was cool, but I was underwhelmed after driving the 325is. The m10 was an auto and it sucked, but I want one with a stick just because it is a classic BMW engine. i ended up buying my 318is sight-unseen off of ebay without ever seeing an m42. The only reason I bought it was because of the price and the people on this forum. Turns out that the 318is doesn't feel much worse than the 325is if you aren't looking at the speedo, and its balance is in a whole different world. The only thing it doesn't match is the exhaust note ;)
BTW I'm going to florida this week. My grandparents live in Venice, so I'll be on the lookout for other e30's :)
-
Well, I'm gunna go pick it up, I really need a DD and a car soon so for the price you cant beat it.
-
ive driven a few eta's and the M42 is much faster! like stated before: a well tuned M42, verses a poorly mantained 325i, the M42 will be just about as fast as the 325i. almost....

I'd say that the M42 can out handle any 325i. It really depends on driver in this situation IMO. So the place you are driving will greatly change the effect of the race. Straight line id bet on a 6 banger... Granted you are asking a 4 banger club to talk you into a 4 banger.. If you go to any other E30 forum most people will tell you 1989 325is = the best.
Can't wait to see some better pictures of that little E30. Good luck, Happy Craigslisting
Heres my list of my favorite E30s
1989 M3 = #1 (some day)
1991 318is = #2 (DD)
1989 325is = #3 (some day track car)

Well, I drove the car. It's just not the car for me. Car is insanely slow. If I'm gunna go 4cyl might as well get a honda cause you can actually make that fast. I also know for a fact my 325e would walk a 318is. But to each there own.

1.8 L (1796 cc/109 in³) 100 kW (136 ps) @ 6000 172 N·m (127 ft·lbf) @ 4600 6500 for 1989
2.7 L (2693 cc/164 in³) 92 kW (123 hp) @ 4250 240 N·m (177 ft·lbf) @ 3250 4500 1983.
Good luck with a Honda!! LOL good luck with all the front wheel hopping around corners, great tuner choice.... uber cornering.. German Engineering > Japs Engineering.
RWD vs FWD, Smart tuners should know RWD is the only thing to build up. I dislike Vdubs but it still rather drive a mark 1 jetta than a dime a dozen honda with a fart pipe
Off the line a E might be able to pull a trailor but in the corners it doesnt stand a chance.
-
And while I'm driving around town I can't be going around turns at all. There isn't a single windy road any where near me. And my eta's weren't stock so again my etas would walk a 318is. And I'm deff not getting a ugly lame ass honda, please trust me on that. FWD is gay as fuck. Thats why the only thing I look at is bmw's. I was just saying that i could turbo a honda for way less and it would walk gt mustangs easy.

if i was you i would just mount a small block on a go-cart. Thats how we beat mustang gt's on the westside! After owning an ETA for 3 years i decided its the worst BMW since a 320i. As for walking all over a 318is.. Thats like saying my stock honda with the 15 race design stickers will walk your tuned eta, talk to someone with a built M42 or a small block mounted to a go cart.. they will beat your eta in a straight line.

Calm down fellows.
There is no such thing as a right or wrong decision when it comes to car ownership. The buyer has to like the car. Heck I'd turn down a whole bunch of cars priced higher and with more power than what I drive now because they don't meet my desires.
Grimm- you test drove the car and it didn't suit your taste, that's not a sin!
Good luck with your search regardless of what you end up with

Ya its all gooooood, I'm just amazed that someone would like an ETA better than an M42 but "The driver doesnt pick the car, the car picks the driver"

this almost made me cry

Ya im still crying thinkin about what i'd do with myself if i didnt have mountains all around me with windy roads to play on!

Why don't you get a 240sx or some other RWD Nissan? Sure everyone drives/drifts them, but they would be more fun than a FWD economy car.

Sick Burn!! J/K nothing beats a old school corolla! Check out my buddies with his Levian front end, its 65lbs lighter than the stock front end. 20valve little 4 banger swapped into this bad boy, its one hell of a little rice burner... oh ya this guy works for BMW.. Sad he doesnt drive an E30 but a few of his co-workers drive E30 325is

Not trying to argue, just stating facts, if the 318IS feels slow compared to an Eta, it was either not driven correctly, or the motor is in poor shape.

the 318is will OWN the 325i in 1st gear (either that or the people i have "raced" did'nt know how to start off-the-line). after that the 325i starts to pull on the 318......untill you hit a turn .

Thanks sheep,
I bet the car has never had a tune up or something like that

That Levin front clip swap looks pretty clean. I want a Levin hatchback someday...one of my dream cars right there.
Something like these:

its hard to find a car that puts a big of a smile on my face than the 318is :), the car car is amazingly fun on a windy road. wouldnt trade it for anything (mayba a lotus exige :p....but then i would need a seperate DD).
-
lol, guys I'm just kidding. I never went and looked at it. Hopefully I can go check I out today. The guy almost sold it. SO I have to go get this quick.
The car seems to be a great deal for 1500.
Only thing is my friends keep hatin on me for wanting it. They keep tellin me that 4 cyl are for rice burners. They all have vr6 mk3 gti's. Boy those are a blast to drive. But I really don't care what they think.
Oh, and PS: my buddy ricer rob has a honda eg hatch slammed and FI. We did a 2 step launch right out of a toll booth onto the highway at 4k rpm's and ripped all the way through 4th gear. That thing pulled like a god damn bat out of hell. Got to 120 in about 14 seconds out of a 1.6 liter.
-
Goin to pick it up in about 2 hours. Hopefully the paint isn't to faded out.

Nice! Inspect the crap out of it just for haggling purposes! Look at any flaw and mention it to the owner and see if you can talk him down. Btw a rice burner has to be from a country that produces alot of rice.. Its a german wind up toy!
-
lol, good way to put it man. damn kraut burners. You better beleive ill inspect it. I mean i've had 2 so I know all the trouble spots on the chassis. The motor is a whole new toy though. :)

Ya i checked all the rubber on mine when i bought it.. Didnt know much about the M42 at the time besides the profile gasket failing but it has enough miles to make it past that 40k failure.. I just revved the motor and looked for body work or lines that didnt line up. Car was 100% but i had to point out the things like the LSD being covered in about 10 years of oil leakage and dirt... Also pointed out that the driveshaft was bent and he quickly took my offer knowing he was in deep.
-
Well, i looked at it for real this time. The car was alot more beat then I thought it would be. On of the tires was shredded. It had a bottlecap on the front right low on air. IT had the other rim in the back with a brand new tire but shit. The belts all squeaked when i turned it on. They stopped like a minute after. It was leaking coolant and PS fluid. The car also had a wierd noise coming from the motor. It was either a bad water pump or some metal in the motor. That really sketched me out. So i didnt end up buying it i offered 1300 but he said no he could only go to 1400. If he woulda takin 1300 i woulda bought it.
Im hooked on the m42 in the e30. That thing was a ball to test drive. :D

Every E30 I've owned all came with odd wheels and tires.. I think the first one had 3 different size tires but 4 stock bottle caps. Leaky coolant and a grindy water pump is bad news if you are headed along ways. The price is good if its got a good core but it will take a bit to make it a great DD
-
Just found another 318is for 1250 this ones white! I'm not a big fan of red cars. I think i love the m42.

So your really not gunna find a decent 318is for less than 2k am I... That one is beat to fuck. It would need so much damn work.

the kid i got mine from wanted like 5 grand to start. He drove it until it started to clunk and the price came down quickly. i offered him $2500 and he seemed shady so i didnt take it, in the end he wanted $2000 for it and it was broken down on the side of the road. It cost me $200 for a used tranny, $250 for new clutch kit, $358 for a "new" driveshaft
-
Look up around Atlanta, supposedly there are quite a few up there.
Expecting a decent 318IS for $2000 or less is not likely going to happen. Even getting a decent one for book price is extremely difficult.
-
Yeah I shoulda bought that red one. It needed a little work but the price was decent. AHHHHHHH:mad:

Truthfully, before 89 the 325 only had like 132 horses, and when your talking only 4 horses and probably close to an extra 150 pounds for 2 extra cylinders, that's quite a bit. I'm turning probably close to 140 bhp now, with my exhaust and conical filter. I think if you are strictly going from the 85 and 86 stand point, you will see a great difference. I've thought (for about a second) to go to a 91 325is, but I'm getting 31 mpg and still having fun driving it (when I get about 5 miles from my house the road turns into silly string, it's great).
-
when I get about 5 miles from my house the road turns into silly string, it's great
this is what it's all about. period.
-
I don't know how you guys are getting such good gas mileage...I just filled up yesterday, 23mpg. And I don't leave it at 5,000 RPM all the time.

agreed, around town i only get 23ish, on the freeway i can get close to 28 one time i got 29.2, i was stoked i was doing 85mph (on the way to bimmerfest).
-
so the mpg gauge doesn't actually work?
-
so the mpg gauge doesn't actually work?
it does but its not accurate, full throttle shows 3-5mpg while accelerating, neutral shows 60+ mpg while coasting on the freeway and driving 70mph in 5th shows about 26.......if you can calculate all those difference in your head while driving; then ya it works. its more of a sophisticated vacuum gauge if you ask me .
-
It works decent if everything is in perfect working order.
When was the last time your fuel filter was changed, oil, plugs, O2 sensor, etc...
Still I find mine to not be bad. As has been said, you have to average it out.
And yes it is pretty much a vacuum gauge with some tweaks to it as far as I can tell.
-
my car only has 135k on if... that might be helping ;)
-

not bad. have you ever replaced your O2? thats one of my top tune up pieces to come
-
I dunno, I'm getting 27 with almost no highway driving. 201k miles, magnaflow exhaust, mark d chip, basic stuff like that, so I doubt that's why. This is calculated with the trip odometer, and I don't know how accurate that is. My overall tire sive is very close to that of stock tires.
-
not bad. have you ever replaced your O2? thats one of my top tune up pieces to come
No, I have not. The car had 105K on it when we bought it 10 years ago (from a dealer) so I'm sure it had it done as they did a L2 inspection on it before we purchased it.
It does surge quite a bit at idle [esp when cold] so I'm sure a tuneup is in order. I'm thinking I might replace the AFM, plugs, wires and O2 sensor this spring.

Idle is probably the idle control valve. It is a cylinder behind the upper intake manifold and is partially hidden by the cowl. This is half the cost of a new AFM and is probably more effective. My AFM is original at 200k and has no problems, but the ICV has been replaced.

No, I have not. The car had 105K on it when we bought it 10 years ago (from a dealer) so I'm sure it had it done as they did a L2 inspection on it before we purchased it.

Nice, my car was bought used and it was "inspected" during this inspection they must have removed my oil sump pickup haha

sometimes, a sound is worth a thousand written words :D
the amplitude of the idle hunting is from about 650-1100RPM
the frequency is about 1Hz
better?
