Title: Magnaflow exhaust installed!
Post by: gearheadE30 on September 08, 2007, 10:01:32 AM
Well, due to the good things I have heard about Magnaflow exhausts, I finally replaced my rusty, raspy Bosal with a #11265 replacement. Sound is amazing, without any rasp, but it has a lot of resonance around 2500 RPM. I will try to get some sound clips, but my crappy camera was clipping whenever I hit the gas. $70 for the muffler, 50 for the tips, and 77 for installation, with stainless welds.

Title: Diy?

I also just installed a #11265 Magnaflow.  Sounds great.  It looked as though Ray Charles had installed the previous muffler.  I just clamped mine in.  Will take to a proper shop for welding soon enough.  I like your choice of tip(s).  Was valance modification required to get the twins to fit?

Yes, the rear valence had to be cut to fit twin tips in there.

Looks nice.  Can't wait to hear it.  How about a link to where you got it.

Ditto on the 2500 RPM raspiness. Must be a "thing" with M42's. I like the tips!

Thanks for all the comments :). Yes, I had to cut the valence a little bit to get it to fit, but it really didn't take much. It isn't a DIY as I don't have access to a welder, and I wanted it done right the first time.

I'll get a clip or two posted soon, but I've had a tennis match every night this week :/. Maybe tomorrow...

EDIT: Now I really need to get my Taurus skirts and the rear valence painted ;)

I just noticed the plate filler.  Looks good.

I did a search for your muffler using the same number and I find the price is $122.  I like how the muffler has a non-visible can look from the rear.  I really like the dual tips.

When you get a chance I would like to find out where you got the parts.

I got the same muffler at Summit Racing for $73.  There was an online advertisement for ~ $54, but they were lying, they really wanted $73.

I find it puzzling that others are getting resonance.  I have none, regardless of where I am in the rev band.

Bavauto.com for one.  I painted mine with trim paint before I put it on.

I got my filler from Bavatuo as well. The muffler and tips came from Summit racing, although my local private auto shop also carried both the muffler and tip in stock.

I'm not sure that resonance is the right word. It is just a lot louder from 2500 to 3000 than it is anywhere else. I also have a reletively worn-out cat and a pretty small non-stock resonator....

BTW half day of school tomorrow, hopefully I'll have time to make a clip before the tennis match :).

Pretty loud. I have one on my car.  When its cold its really raspy but once warmed up it sounds great.  I like it.  Feels like quite a bit more power at highway speeds too.

THX!

Sounds pretty darn good.  I'm sold!

BTW, what is the # for your tips?  I think they might be 35168 ( 3" dia x 10" length)

Dang, it takes forever to upload.... Here (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8994705606963655541&q=m42+magnaflow&total=6&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=5) is another one from inside.

Yes, the tips are 35168. They look great on the car, IMO a big plus over a 3-inch single tip.

looks and sounds great! kinda like my car i have a header 2.25 piping and a high flow magnaflow cat, vibrant resonator, magnaflow muffler. its a little loud and raspy, but its funn:D

I have a custom 2.5" line that starts from the headers. I use a magnaflow converter, maganflow resonator and magnaflow muffler. Sounds pretty good...espacially at the track at 7200rpm :D I first did the line using only the resonator and muffler...and while it sounded kick ass...it was WAAAYY too loud for the street, actually sounded similar to my friends' E30 M3 with his Supersprint race exhaust.

ya i was kinda surprised how loud they can be. ha when i putting the new exhaust on i started it with just the header on it that was loud, but it was still loud with the exhaust. but it makes it fun

I had a quick question before I order.  Do you have the stock exhaust from the engine back?  Also, is there fair amount of cabin noise.  I can hear your blinkers so it can't be too loud.

The previous owner put in a new cat, and I highly doubt that it is a very good, high-flow one. Also, my piping and resonator are from a Bosal exhaust, also from the PO. The pipes look the same as stock, but the resonator is significantly smaller. I'm fairly sure it would be quieter with the stock resonator.

At little throttle inputs, it is actually quite quiet, especiallty if it is kept under 2500 RPM or above 3000 RPM. I drove for about 2 hours on the highway with it, and it can get annoying when going uphill. There is a *tiny* bit of drone at 3k RPM/60-65 mph that is probably due to the resonator. I know this all sounds bad, but you get used to it, and the highway noise isn't bad if there is music playing.

I got quite a few complements on it at the last bmwcca autox, so some people like it. In fact, I have a video here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=qxTsczSoh7w). Gotta love E30 slow steering. I also pulled off the shift knob twice during this run :)

Thanks.  I really like the sound. Trying to get some input before it gets done.  My community is gated and I have already gotten a "ticket" from the wonderful world of neighborhood assoiciation.  I got the ticket for parking my car out front with the black trim and fogs removed.  WTF?

I sure they will ST when the install is driven through the alley.  Thanks for all the help.  I am going to order the parts tomorrow.

What would you all recommend for sizing for piping post-cat? Probably just going to throw a Magnaflow or a Cherry Bomb on there (doing exhaust more for weight savings than anything else), and just piping after the cats.
