Title: My name is....TIATO
Post by: tiato on April 18, 2006, 09:34:33 AM
I own a '91 318is and a supercharged '98 M3 Sedan.  Benn invloved with BMWs since 1998 when I bought a 1.9L Z3.  Since then I have owned and tracked almost every BMW Ive owned - Techno '98 M3 Coupe, '99 Z3 M Coupe, the Z3.  97% of all car work I do myself.

Out of all the cars Ive drievn on track, the z3 and the 318 have had the most modifications and been the most satisfying to drive fast.  Ive driven at Lime Rock, Summit Point and Watkins Glen, but most of my seat time is at the Glen.

Below links to two track videos, edited to provide more visual entertainment.

First Watkins Glen 1.

Many years before Saab used Paul Oakenfolds Ready, Steady, Go in their lame ass commercials, I used it in my own driving video with much better impact.

WGI 1 (http://www.altechcorp.com/mario/movies/wgi1.wmv)

Watkins Glen 2 - Here you can hear the hamster spinning fury of the M42 as muffled through a custom Magnaflow exhaust.

WGI 2 (http://www.altechcorp.com/mario/movies/wgi2.wmv)

Heres the skinny on my car:

No A/C
No Trunk Lining
No Radio
No Speakers

H&R Adjustable Suspension
ST Sway Bars
Turner Rear Sway Bar Re-enforcements
K-Mac Camber Plates
Rogue Engineering Rear Shock Mounts
e30M3 Aluminum Control Arms
e0M3 Offset Control Arms Bushings
IE Rear Trailing Arm Bushings
IE Rear Subframe Bushings
Turner Stainless Brake Lines
4.10 LSD
15x7 Kosei K1 (for track)

Turner Conforti Chip
Custom CAI
Custom Magnaflow Exhaust
1.9L Z3 Shift Lever
Speedware Motorsports HarnessBar
Schroth Profi III 4 pt harness

Makes for a quick car.
Enjoy.

Hey, first off, big welcome dude!

okay... I just watched the videos... the second video, I'm embarrassed to say, is pure porn...

watching you out-brake, out-corner, and then out rev that audi (a4?) was phenomenal... that poor dude is still trying to figure out what happened.

We have a small topic area for racing and other organized driving type events, so any knowledge etc you can pass on would be welcome.

thanks for joining up!!

That's a quick m42 you have there. I enjoyed the video :). How many cameras did you have going there? 4 or 5 it looked like. How many kms are on the car?

Wow, that video is way better than pics!

That being said, can you post or send me a pic of your Speedware harness bar?
I used to work just down the street from Speedware.  They are in Bellevue, Washington and do a lot of P-car work for the local Microsofties.  It's a pretty cool race shop though and they do some nice fabrication work.

You say you have H&R adjustable suspension.  Is this the H&R coil-overs that Turner sells?

Welcome to the club!

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Febi - that Audi was an mid 90's production S4 (based on the Audi 100 series before they were rebadged A6) - 5 cylinder turbo.  Fast cars.  The end of that video is a great example of the equalizing factor a well driven lightweight  momentum car has when pitched against a much more powerfull but heavier car. Check out what happens when I go up against a Focus SVT.  Ill post that video in a bit.

Mike - 1 Camera, 6 different video (Track) sessions.  I used a remote camera that interfaces with the video camera.

M42 - let medo some digging and I will post an image.  Yes, it is the suspension that turner sells.

...that SVT focus clip is totally hot... dude, you can really drive

I love how after you blow by him, he comes off his line to try to chase you, early apexes, and gets eaten alive. classic!!

Every year for the past 4 years or so I do a weekend at Lime Rock (skip barber). I'm (almost always) amazed at the disparity between what the guy drives to the track, and how the guy drives *on* the track.

(I had a distinct advantage in this one area because for the last three years, I had no car! :D )

Granted its driving school so mad props to anyone who wants to get better... but holy cow... I can imagine the owner of that audi heading straight to his service counter asking 'wtf is wrong with my car??!'

related point on the SVT focus (a very decent little car):
can anyone on the board imagine getting truly excited about a FWD car?

:D :D   HAHA, funny you mention that, because whenever I drive the car near a concrete divider, I think back to that day....

I was an evil influence

Having owned a '94 Audi S4 and a '95 S6 Avant, I can attest to this.  They are reasonably fast stock (6.5 second 0-60), and can be made into beasts with simple software and bolt on parts (RS2 Porsche turbo, injectors, MAF, etc).  Febi, all the performance Audis are Quattro AWD.

Unfotunately for the S-cars, all that great motor was sticking out in FRONT of the front wheels to accomodate the very heavy and large Torsen differential, casuing a lot of "plow" or understeer into the corners.

Great driving car, especially if you live in snow country.  Poor choise for a track car IMHO.  Too heavy and with all that weight up front, cause for poor performance driving dynamics.  Also, the steering rack was mounted in the wrong place (on the firewal) making the steering feel numb and disconected.

Thanks for the pic of the harness bar.  How pricey was it?  I know Speedware isn't known for it's low cost.

IIRC, it was somewhere around $375 when I bought it 3 years ago.  Nice stainless steel construction.

Sweet. Another nice brilliantrot:D . I have to find the vids I have in my old 2002. A buddy and me made at least 10. I have yet to make a track vid with my 318is. Only my acceleration run vids here:p .  Do you need hubcentric rings to run the Koseis? What size spacers? I've been thinking of running a set and painting them gold/bronze.

Here's what I used to track:

M42 - Running 205/50R15 BFG G-Force K/D on 15x7 Kosie K1s.  Quite an amazing tire.  They came with the car and had 3k miles on them.  In the last 3 seasons I have out prolly another 3k miles on them, plus 5 track days totaling 13 hard track hours.  Tread looks like it could take another 2-3k street miles or another 4 track days.  Very grippy when hot, linear and predictable and also provide some nice auditory feedback.  Youv got to love lightweight track cars as consumeable last soooo much longer.

Grippy - Nice '02.  What happened to it?  The Kosies come with hubcentric plastic spacers.  I do not know the measurements.

Streetspec - whats shakin jake?

I sold the '02 last year. She ran a very basic setup, but was a lot of fun to drive. This is what I had in her:

Engine:
40 DCOE side drafts (eventually changed to a 38/38 Weber)
shrick cam
Tii manifold
ANSA exhaust

Suspension:
ST Springs
ST Adjustable sway bars
Bilstiein Sports

Oh yeah, forgot the 3.91 lsd

It's the hands on the wheel that tell the story. From working in pit crews and being a spotter it's one of the things you learn to look for. I love day-glo orange gloves. You can see them from farther away. Smooooooth!

I apologize for the inconvenience.  My companies web server is starting to feel the limits of memory required my companies web site.  As such my webmaster tends to prune unneccessary data, such as my videos and images.

I hope that once we pull our site from an external host and internalize it, these type of things will go away.

Grippy, feel free to host my videos.

Special thanks to anyone who can host these!

I love the dirty pics best TIATO!  But, your car is also really clean.  Looks great!

Your car is set up almost exactly like how I'm setting up mine, minus the fact you got the really trick adjustable H&R coil-overs, which are no longer available in the US
(at least for the time being)  :(

I think that harness bar with some 4 pt belts will be a future upgrade.

Hope your company gets thier server migrated soon so you can re-host the full-length, high-res versions of those great films you made!  Thanks to GrippyDrifty for posting some smaller clips in the meantime.
