Title: Power steering question...
Post by: Artem on August 05, 2007, 02:23:22 AM
Just to start - I just did a front suspension on the car, and man, was it a pain - I had to drop the crossmember to redo the control arms... Not what I envisioned, especially after working on the E34. But well, it is all over with and maybe if I had a lift, it would be easier. Would probably be faster if I didnt have to swap absolutely everything from the suspension (except maybe tie rods (they are in good shape) and sway bar endlinks (the latter I didnt do yet just because I didnt have the replacement parts)).

Anywhoo... My power steering has been pissing me off lately, not only because I had to remove the damn rack to drop the crossmember and putting it on the crossmember after about 4 hours worth of work was a major PITA, but also because it squeaks like crazy sometimes, eats some of my horsepower, and leaks. What I have been wondering is. Has anyone had any experience with replacing the power steering rack with a non-power steering rack? I know that in an E34, running without power steering is almost impossible. But an E30 is almost half the weight of an E34, and I was perfectly able to move the wheel without the motor on.

Just wondering what my options are out there. I mean of course, I can always rebuild the whole system, but removing it would be soo much easier, and if I could endure the lack of the power steering, I would.

Let me know guys,
Artem :)

Just take off the pump, reservoir, and lines, block off holes in rack with some plugs from a local hardware store (forgot sizes) and enjoy. I've been running without power steering for awhile now and don't miss it. Some times i think it was a dream that i took it off.... lol. Really not much of a difference
