Hi, i am getting ready to put my car on the road. i do a lot of 8-10 hour drives.
I owned a 88 535is several years ago and did some minor things to it. Changed fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, plugs fuel filter so i am not totally helpless but dont consider myself a bonafide mechanic.
I would like your input and maybe a list of some priority items i could carry just in case. relays? ecu?
Thanks

fuel pump relay, coolant temp sensor (for the ECU), extra light bulbs, lots of fuses, wire (i always carry electrical wire)....hmm, theres much more i just cant think of right now. coolant or water, oil, p/s fluid, etc.
in the 6 years i have been driving E30 318's i have noticed that if you take care of them they take care of you, the only breakdown i ever had was my fuel pump died when i pulled my car into my dads shop to vacuum out my car, i knew the pump was going so it was no big deal.

Lots of fuses and some spare fuel pump and main relays. Wire too, all as mentioned above. Don't forget some dykes, crimpers and electrical tape. I like to keep a full compliment of butt-splices in the trunk, zip ties and duct tape. I actually used butt-splices to fix a busted throttle cable once lol.
If you can afford it, keep some extra radiator hoses on you.
Extra coolant, distilled water, oil, and ATF for the power steering is good too. Maybe some brake fluid, but if you have a leak you are sorta screwed anyway. Good luck!

AAA card and a rusty jack.

I bought a jack from a Chevy Tahoe --- MUCH more stable and stronger than the BMW trunk jack mono-leg thing that scares me.
I would never get under a car supported only by a jack anyway --- but I worry about the jack leaning over and the car falling down while I'm changing a wheel / tire on the side of a highway or something.

As the others have listed and on what 16v said, I carry a Honda jack cause they go really flat and stand tall when extended.
-
the biggest problem w/ the bmw jack is people don't know how to use them. And/or try to use them on gravel etc.
but I have one of the aluminum craftsman jacks ;)

I always carry duct tape. You can do amazingly ghetto fixes with that in a pinch...
doh, just noticed someone already mentioned that.. I'm posting anyways!
